This resets on reloading the game in BO1. You have to enter campaign and then zombies. WaW is the one that retains it.

For YEARS I had wondered why I had memories of getting red-screened before Jug but didn’t anymore. It’s because I never replayed campaign (which I would have set to Vet). Just tried it and it’s back!! Crazy revelation to have so many years later.

I remember in waw if you played campaign and then zombies you'd get a red screen after being hit once, but not if you went straight into zombies without playing anything else. I always thought it had to do with scripting differences between the modes, i didnt realize there was an actual gameplay difference. This is very interesting.
