I was at the debate last night. It was obvious from the start that the audience was overwhelmingly pro- Zionist. The audience was polled before the debate and the result showed over 70% in attendance agreed with the debate statement that Anti- Zionism is Antisemitism. The pro Zionist debaters spent the entire evening spewing propaganda talking points straight from the Israeli government playbook. They knew the audience was with them and so they felt emboldened to play upon the emotions and loyalties they had. I was actually shocked to see the complete deflection by them of any responsibility that Israel has in the utter devastation in Gaza. Mehdi Hassan and Gideon Levy were truthful and heart felt in their arguments. It was especially heartbreaking to hear Gideon Levy give his own personal account of living in Israel, only to hear him be brushed off as a “one off “ in his Israeli society. I was extremely impressed with how rational and calm Mehdi remained despite the despicable cat calls from the audience. I’m extremely disappointed that the audience was unable to open their minds to the points being argued to them regarding the utter disgrace of the current Zionist movement. I know there are millions of ordinary Canadians who are supporting Palestine. I am one of them. They just weren’t at this very exclusive debate.

The late great Christopher Hitchens would have given Douglas Murray a run for his money in terms of Islamophobia. However, Hitchens did not let his harsh criticisms of Islam get in the way of his principled stance against the state of Israel. He always stood up for the Palestinians, despite thinking their religion was insanely dangerous and toxic.
