"I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." From Matthew, is correctly interpreted as a metaphor. However, that verse in Luke, I can not really see how it can be taken as a metaphor. The point Jesus was making was that his disciples should abandon their families and become an apocalyptic cult. Thus, they needed to defend themselves against both Roman pagans and traditional Judaic movements such as the pharisees.

Yes, the Christian emphasis on self-defense is why they spent a couple of centuries tranquilly going off and getting martyred.

Jesus didn't go with them willingly, him and his disciples had a Hollywood style sword fight, racking up a spectacular kill count as they fled the city... Later returning and, in true old testament style, overthrew the Roman army and established a theocratic utopia...
