Fall foraging | Wild fruit and nuts in the Northeast U.S.

In this video I decided to bring the camera along on some lovely autumn walks and talk about some of the wild edible nuts and fruits that can be foraged in the Northeast United States. Many of these plants are Native to the U.S. and can be found growing in many different regions of the country. Though some of the plants are considered invasive to some parts of the country they provide nutritious and often medicinal fruits that can be harvested in larger amounts. In this video we talk about black walnut, shagbark hickory, spicebush, persimmon, frost grape, multiflora rose and autumn olive. Persimmon hunting was a large part of fall foraging this year and we had lots of fun coming up with creative ways to get some of them. I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the rest of autumn. Also, sorry for putting this out so late! Happy foraging!

Very awesome! Love this style of video! Super informative and inspiring. Makes me wanna fill up another truckbed of walnuts.

Here’s the absolute BEST pecan/walnut/hickory nut pie recipe I have personally ever tasted

Makes TWO pie crusts:
1 & 1/2 cups flour
2/3 cup of lard/butter/shortening (I personally like lard or butter)
Pinch of salt
1/4 cup COLD water

Pie filling:
1 cup nuts (pecans, black walnuts, or hickory nuts)
3 lrg eggs
3 Tbl softened butter
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup maple syrup
Pinch salt
1 tsp vanilla

Roll the cup of walnuts in 1 Tbl flour.
Combine pie filling. Put in pie crust that’s been rolled flat and put in a pie pan. Bake @350 for 35-40 minutes. Trust me. Try it once and it’ll be worth the effort. I promise.

One good thing about Black Walnuts is that the inner hull has this substance that acts similar to Iodine. If you’re ever injured out in the wild break open the rind and use the brown Liquid on the injury site to sterilize it. Works as well as iodine itself.

I foraged for black walnuts in Central Park and they are still in my house years later, but I never thought of saving seeds for planting, I appreciate your advice ❤️🌞

From Tassy down under, your forests are so open and busy, we love your nuts and berries. Our wild food is a lot harder to get. I love your way of showing and telling.

What a treat! Thank you so much and thank that sweet family for getting you that last persimmon on the tree. That's love! I enjoy all your videos, long or short and always learn something. I made ink from walnut hulls a few years ago. It's wonderful for quill pens, doing art in my journals, and it's just fun. A little alcohol added into the ink jar makes it last for years a little goes a long way. Thanks again, happy squirreling!

The best! Again I walk away .00345 smarter today having watched your video. I didn't know about those wild grapes before. Glad you got your hands on the native persimmon. I'm so surprised that you have all those wild fruits and nuts growing around you. Amazing 👏

Bravo to your helpers! Lol!! Kim and I loved this! You are hysterical looking for those seeds. I tasted the olive berry this spring and it was so tart. Guess it wasn't ripe yet! Looking forward to seeing your tree forest journey!

Loved your video! Good work! Hopefully we don't get a drought this year in MN, and some native seeds can find their way to your family's garden!
