This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This Core Concept video focuses on Augustine of Hippo's short work, On Free Choice of the Will, book 1, specifically on his discussion of what the source of the wrongness of wrongdoing is. Augustine and his student, Evodius discuss whether it is violation of the law or other social norms, passion (libido), desire, or fear, or - as it ultimately turns out to be - the human will.

My videos are used by students, lifelong learners, other professors, and professionals to learn more about topics, texts, and thinkers in philosophy, religious studies, literature, social-political theory, critical thinking, and communications. These include college and university classes, British A-levels preparation, and Indian civil service (IAS) examination preparation

Thank you for the upload, the video cleared some things up for me but I’m still confused about a few things. So what makes something evil is a defective will that desires something temporal and out of our control when it ought to have been focused on the eternal instead? Wouldn’t that apply equally to murder and health so would that mean there’s degrees of defect? Or is health always prudent unless vanity is the object desired, despite the ability for it to be lost regardless of our will?
