Rain, it's an inevitable force that many runners will encounter in their running journeys. You get drenched, your shoes are soggy, wet, and heavy. So what do runners do? Obviously, we just sit and wait out the rain, right? NOPE! Coach Morgan will give you all her best tips to stay dry so you can keep crushing your runs, no matter the weather.

As someone who sweats fairly heavily, a completely waterproof jacket is a guarantee that I'm going to be soaked from the inside. I've had little success with breathable jackets even at moderate efforts. I don't focus on staying dry but rather on staying warm. I use jackets more for wind proofing, to minimize the cooling effect. I use various weight Merino wool tops to keep my core warm even when I get wet, and especially Merino wool socks to keep my feet warm, because as Coach Morgan said, it's inevitable they get wet. (Wear the shoes with the best wet grip as well - not all soles have the same traction when wet). My goal is to avoid hypothermia, in the rain or in the snow.

Great information. I realized a while ago if I am unable to avoid puddles to just let it be. Love Echo, adorable pooch.

Randy Sun, claims to make breathable windproof, waterproof socks but I haven't tried them. Cuteness overload with that pup.

If it's warm enough, which varies by person, just embrace getting soaked to the bone; it's not going to kill you. But below about 45F & raining, I usually put on a light rain/wind jacket shell, hat, and waterproof socks. Speaking of which... Showers Pass makes the best breathable WP sock, which I find better than SealSkinz. It's also wool-lined, so if water does seep in from above it'll still feel warm-ish and won't stink as much later. Kind of expensive at ~$50, but cheaper than having two kinds of shoes.

Awesome! Very informative. I had no idea about the zippers. Thanks Morgan (also for bringing back Echo)!

I'm in the seattle area and i enjoy running in tights and shorts, then wool socks (like darn tuff), and then i wear a reflector with lights on it because visibility is always good haha. i'm heading over to the winter video now, something i struggled with last year! great info

I have a pair of waterproof trail shoes, and they will keep my feet dry but arent good to run on asfalt roads.

And as previously mentioned; a completly waterproof jacket will make you sweat like crazy, so you need a shirt that will transport the sweat away.

And I think your dog just made your cap a bit more breathable... 🤣

There are waterproof socks for runners that work really well. Merino wool socks dry much faster and help a lot. Trail (or hybrid) shoes drain more quickly and have better grip. If you know you are doing long runs in the rain prepare your feet with Vaseline or other stuff as wet feet rub more. Gortex shoes are good if you don’t submerge your feet. You can use gaiters to stop rain getting in your shoes but again, not if submerged. Rain jackets have different levels of waterproofing and breathability so need to check carefully. Some rain jackets expand at the back so they can go over a pack which helps as well.

Love your point about puddles. Just let it happen and get wet. I have a half marathon race on Nov 6th and forecast says rain and I know it will also be chilly. My first race in the rain. I just bought a Janji RainRunner. I want to do this the right way and keep warm and not so wet. I was going to spray my shoes but decided not too. Thank you for a very informative video and love your puppy.
