I've worked with refugees from many places and her story is more common than you'd think. Specially among people from the upper middle class. The men, so used to their status, have a hard time coping with having to start from the bottom in their adopted country. Women and the poor, who had little to no status before (either because they were day laborers or stay at home housewives) are much more motivated to grind and work to build something. The men, unable to cope with the wife being the breadwinner, often end up divorcing their wives.

My parents divorced and my father disappeared. My Mother worked 3 jobs to keep us housed and fed. Single mothers aren’t always on welfare and taking the fathers to court for child support.
