So Much 'Star Trek' News... and It's Mostly Bad

I was excited to see so much news regarding the future of Star Trek....and then the disappointment set in. There's some good Trek on the horizon, but much of what is coming has me worried.

That clip was a travesty. Vulcans certainly are not born emotionless. It's a learned behavior. No matter what they do now for the rest of season three, that one crappy scene has taken me out of the believability of the show. These writers are pathetic.

Prodigy was the only show other than Picard season 3, that even remotely was Star Trek. Even if Prodigy was a cartoon made for kids. Honestly I don't want to gatekeep, but I despair of Kurtzman's handling of the franchise.

My takes:
SNW: I'm really hopeful that it's the 'comedy' episode and we can just forget about it. So far the show has been mostly excellent, so I have high hopes. Hopefully this is just a blip and we can move along.
Section31: This doesn't feel like Trek in the slightest. I'll probably watch just to say I've seen it, but I'm not expecting it to be even remotely good.
Lower Decks: This will be great.
New show by Tawny Newsome: Uhh... I hope this doesn't get made.
Starfleet Academy: I don't have high hopes, but I'll give it a shot.

All in all, it's looking a bit grim. With the exception of Lower Decks, everything looks kinda like they're trying to take risks without thinking about what they're doing.

I generally agree with all your assessments. I also like Lower Decks best of the new shows, but in a way it's so meta that, in my opinion, it may undermine the trek universe. I don't know who Paramount thinks they're making these new shows for, but it's not the traditional star trek audience who, I expect, they are losing. It's their property and they're entitled to take these shows in a new direction if they wish, but as a traditional trek watcher, I personally don't care to see them.

When I first saw this clip, I was horrified. I honestly thought it was going to be a joke and then they would go, "Let's all be Klingons! Let's all be Ferenghis! Let's all be...nerds! Happy SDCC!" Truly a nadir of modern sci-fi.

Star Trek Prodigy is what you get when you have Voyager's cast and competent showrunners. The people who ran VOY were so awful at their jobs, they didn't even know that an ensign is supposed to make lieutenant.

The producers and writers estimated that they need to cool it up and superherofy star trek to appeal to a young crowd - and they probably estimate correctly. They also switched back to single hero/individual/leader prototypes, also appropriate to the era - ours. It's all chaos and cowboy BS, not science, ethics and cooperation.

This show somehow managed to piss me off within the first couple of scenes on the first show. The almost all female bridge crew was a feminist slap in the face. So unrealistic. And the importance of Nurse Chapel to this show is really fucking stupid. A character written for Roddenberry's girlfriend. Never meant to be a central character. Ever. Why is she even in the show? And how did she become so central to Spock's character? As I recall in STTOS Spock barely tolerated her ridiculous schoolgirl crush on him. And why does she look like a Zombie?

You just know they are trying to make Kirk and Spock a gay couple. With McCoy thrown in for flavor.

Im prepared to wait for context of what we are given here in this teaser- teasers are just that -teasers. There MIGHT be a sensible explanation inside canon for what we see here, but it might be a big let down. Discovery I liked in many ways - but only once I decided to view it as general sci-fi, not real "Star Trek" per se. Strange New Worlds I have become fond of, but I still have issues seeing it as real Trek. But at the end of the day, my yardstick is "how often do I re-watch" something. Im still rewatching TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise. but we have never rewatched Discovery, but have rewatched a few Strange New Worlds episodes. Im not a watcher of the animated series, or Lower Decks, so im unfamiliar with what ppl say about it much. I guess time will tell i suppose.

I want the cast to be able to have fun and I enjoyed the clip. I think it is fair to say that SNW should probably be more careful to have the characters feel more consistent when they swing back and forth from thoughtful episodes to the fun ones where they "go full theater kid"
