Advanced Solo Concepts: Connecting Minor Triads and Pentatonic Patterns

This is an advanced soloing concept to help students move beyond the Pentatonic box shape patterns. In this lesson, I show three minor triad inversions on the GBE strings and how they connect with Pentatonic patterns 1, 2, and 4. This is the same concept as using arpeggios, but breaking it down to three note chords can offer new and simpler ideas.

These three positions can be played in one position at a time or combined to connect horizontally across the fretboard.

"I've Got My Eyes On You" by Buddy Guy is used as an example to apply this concept. The purpose of this video is to help students get out of the rut of playing scales and thinking more melodically. Since I improvised most of what I played, I can't provide tabs.

Love this! Thank you. I took some guitar lessons and worked mainly on the pentatonic shapes triads, but unfortunately never connected them in my head, and I think this will be the key to me finally learning my way around the fretboard. My understanding is that this a key component of John Frusciante’s playing.
