My father was career military and had spent a short period of time in China prior to WW2. He seldom talked about his experiences. When Nixon opened China, I remember my father saying that the opening would come back to haunt the U.S. in ways we couldn't begin to imagine. He said the Chinese mind set was xenophobic, cruel and very patient. He also said that the cheapest commodity in Asian was human life. True words.
