This looks like a Delphi compressor from an Opel/Vauxhall car. On these, the thermal fuse on the coil, behind a small plastic cover, apparently likes to suddenly cease conducting a lot, leaving you with an A/C that works perfectly one day and blows out hot air on the next, with no early warning at all. Making you think you just need a regas, when the gas pressure is still fine, then the AC guy suddenly tells you the compressor clutch isn't engaging. Went through it, twice. I still have the first coil with me, the fuse seems completely fine but it just acts like a blown one and temporarily bridging it restores conductivity through the coil connectors. The original compressor is still inside the car and working quite good.

Nice video but this does not tell you if the clutch is working or not as the title implies. Just tells you that if the clutch were to engage electrically that it appears to drive the compressor fine. Nice points made nonetheless.. thanks

Should it be hard to spin with a full charge of refrigerant on the car still . Mine feels kinda like turning over a lawnmower

I have a 05 ford expedition i been hearing alot of noise when my compressor is on and it stops when i shit off the ac, i had my wife turn it on and off while i look at it and when on theres lil sparks from inside the clutch should i replace just the clutcb or whole compress it has a bad leak but the compressor is only 2.5 years old

I'm getting a loud dry knocking noise from the compressor, will that be from the compressor or the clutch? A new compressor is $600 while the clutch kit is only $50 thats why I'm over the fence... thank you!

I suggest changing the title of the video. The title suggests that it's showing how to check the clutch, but it's actually testing the compressor itself.

ruling out that the "compressor is good" may be a little too fast. we still have to consider the pressure it is giving out. even bad compressors give that hissing sound . auto a/c is a very complicated thing. you should have focused at explaining the clutch operation and how to check it, as the title suggests.

So I got a 06 Chrysler pt cruiser and when I turn the ac on to refil it every 30 seconds or so it acts like it wants to turn on like it clicks but never starts blowing cold air can it be the clutch on the ac or the actual ac? TIA

When you turn the clutch plate you are turning the compressor shaft.
The pulley bearing is mounted on a boss on the compressor body or front cover. It is in use all the time the engine is running on modern compressors. Some very old compressors had the pulley bearing mounted on the shaft behind the outer clutch plate, so it was a true idler bearing that was in use (turning) only when the clutch was disengaged and the ENGINE was running.
Remember, we use ENGINE to denote the internal combustion MOTOR that moves the MOTOR vehicle down the road. We use MOTOR to denote electric MOTORs and hydraulic MOTORs.
This is similar to the term ALTERNATOR to denote the electric GENERATOR or dynamo that charges the battery when the engine is running. GENERATOR is used to denote the old GENERATORs-dynamos that cars had before the mid-1960s, and the GENERATORs that power the house electricity of a recreation vehicle when the RV is parked, and the portable or stationary GENERATORs powered by IC ENGINEs.
All GENERATORs generate ALTERNATING current. The old style GENERATOR rectified the ALTERNATING current with a COMMUTATOR, an electrical switch that is on the armature shaft. ALTERNATORs use solid state RECTIFIERs using a diode (electrical one-way "valve") bridge to convert the ALTERNATING current to DIRECT current, required by the chemical starting BATTERY of six 2 volt cells (12 volt system).
The giant ALTERNATING current GENERATORs in power houses send the ALTERNATING current directly into the power grid.
