What makes the ending great is that you can either go with the "they were punished by spending Christmas forever" or "they were spared and were just reminded that they are being watched" and both will still make sense.

I like the whole collective "that actually happened didn't it" on their faces when they see the object

The prequel graphic novel "Krampus: Shadow of Saint Nicholas'" revealed that anyone spared by Krampus will be kept on surveillance by him through their respectful snow globe in his workshop.

Before you go mad about how this ending went, read this.

Krampus did not take them to hell. He merely gave them his sign to remind them of their promise to him that they'd never lose their spirit again, and then used the snow globe to observe them and ensure they kept their promise.

This leaves two possible implications:

Krampus has trapped them in the snow globe. So now they must celebrate Christmas for all eternity in a twisted form of Hell.

Or

Krampus believes they have learned their lesson and is using the snow globe not as a prison, but as a form of surveillance to keep an eye on the family to make sure they never lose their Christmas spirit again.

I choose to believe in the latter.

I'll give this movie props for giving a nice twist ending

I love that it's not a happy ending.

Max got what he wanted, Christmas like it used to be. And he'll get it for the rest of eternity.

The movie was actually great, complete with a twist on the "it was all a dream" trope. A perfect counterpart to the cheesy TV Christmas specials.

So was the family stuck in a snow globe for ever or was Krampus keeping an eye on the family through a snow globe to make sure they never lose hope

For anybody wondering, I think I know what the movie meant for the ending. The snow globes are all a manner in which Krampus watches families that may give up or have given up in Christmas. Krampus was going to win in a way because he was going to take everyone away. The grandma said that Christmas was about self sacrifice for the ones that you love. The kid lost his sense of Christmas when he tore up the letter because he didn't think that anyone sacrificed anything for others. Krampus was going to take his family to hell for causing this loss in belief, but it also punishes the kid for losing belief in the first place. By openly admitting to Krampus that he regretted losing his belief, he also showed that he also exhibited self sacrifice on behalf of saving his family. Krampus decides to give the boy another chance by restoring everything to the way that it was and would be without him coming except that he gives the bell. His bell is different from the grandmas because her bell is a reminder of the consequences of losing belief in self sacrifice while the boys bell serves as a reminder of the consequences should he lose faith ever again.

I loved the look of fear on their faces when they remembered what happened with Krampus.

guys that Santa statue at 1:39 giving them kinda like a mean glaring look! keep in mind krampus is his assistant

I think just the fact that the kid sees the rest of the neighborhood beyond the limits of the glass dome is proof enough that the snowglobe is just a method of keeping an eye out on the family

No people Krampus did not trap him in hell, he gave him a second chance. It was just saying that he always is watching you so be good for goodness sakes.

One of the best twist ending for a horror movie.

An ending that’s very poetic and it’s a nice change from the usual happy endings of most holiday flicks
Instead of people growing and changing they’re punished for their lack of love for the season

My theory this ending:
Krampus gave Max a second chance and the snow gobbles are a way for Krampus to keep an eye on them. Also when Max receives the Krampus bell, remember how all the family were looking concerned at each other. I believe they all had the same dream that Max had.
Anyways stay safe and Merry Christmas

The ending with the snow globes represent Krampus watching over the families whom now believe in the spirit of Christmas. If any of ya seen the Disney Santa Clause films, then mostly everyone understood the snow globes. Also notice how theirs few in the area and not a whole stocked warehouse, their actually the families or one person succeed in their punishments.
