O2 2- Lewis Structure: How to Draw the Lewis Structure for O2 2-

A step-by-step explanation of how to draw the O2 2- Lewis Dot Structure (Peroxide Ion).

For the O2 2- structure use the periodic table to find the total number of valence electrons for the O2 2- molecule. Once we know how many valence electrons there are in O2 2- we can distribute them around the central atom with the goal of filling the outer shells of each atom.

In the Lewis structure of O2 2- structure there are a total of 14 valence electrons. O2 2- is also called Peroxide Ion.

Note that you should put the O2 2- Lewis structure in brackets with as 2- on the outside to show that it is an ion with a negative two charge.

----- Steps to Write Lewis Structure for compounds like O2 2- -----
1. Find the total valence electrons for the O2 2- molecule.
2. Put the least electronegative atom in the center. Note: Hydrogen (H) always goes outside.
3. Put two electrons between atoms to form a chemical bond.
4. Complete octets on outside atoms.
5. If central atom does not have an octet, move electrons from outer atoms to form double or triple bonds.

----- Lewis Resources -----

Lewis Structures, also called Electron Dot Structures, are important to learn because they help us understand how atoms and electrons are arranged in a molecule, such as Peroxide Ion. This can help us determine the molecular geometry, how the molecule might react with other molecules, and some of the physical properties of the molecule (like boiling point and surface tension).

Wait so if I were to use dots and crosses will the middle 2 be one dot and one cross?

Is this the dominating structure? Why not a double bound for a formal charge of 0?

Hi! I have a question regarding the number of bonds here. Usually oxygen tends to form double bonds for it's stability and satisfying it's octet. So, my question here is...what caused the exception for Peroxide ion that made it only have one single bond and how it's formed actually? Would really appreciate your response. Thanks.

Where do the extra 2 electrons come from?

Hey dude, what would be the structure of O2 1+

i really appreciate your work and your channel is a miracle to me but i have this question about why dont we use the cross for the bonding pair of bonding between 2 O, is it because this is an ion
?

From where did it get 2 extra electrons?

Why didn't you show formal charges on oxygen atoms?? Clearly formal charge on both is 1 right

every peroxide structure I've seen has a double bond though... with one extra unbonded electron per oxygen atom.
