The goal of the psychology of sustainable behavior is to create conditions that make sustainable action the most appealing or natural choice.
The environment is not something separate from us, humans are an integral part of the environment and significant damage to the environment will ultimately affect human life.
With the waste we mean all those things that we eliminate every day, even if the concept of waste has changed over the years because.
It is linked to the way we produce and consume.
Recycling is essential to decrease the presence of waste in the environment and consists of transforming primary packaging into resources.
Over the decades, recycling procedures have become increasingly effective and the public sector continuously examines adequate
incentives to encourage recycling behavior.
People who are in a more aware state of awareness tend to act more sustainably.
Therefore, raising awareness is also likely to increase sustainable behavior.
It could be argued that recycling works in a conditionally collaborative way, so that people are di-discouraged from recycling if they observe environmental degradation.
Research of CIALDINI, (1991) on social norms and waste confirms that people in a dirty environment, tend to recycle less than those
exposed in a clean environment.
To feel competent and autonomous in their attempts to live more sustainably, people need help, need reasonable choices and need information that will help them learn and help them choose.
Providing feedback to families on their recycling benefits in relation to
community performance, can increase people's sensitivity to social recycling standards.
Studies highlighted the possible influence deriving from the observation of
the behavior of neighbors, friends and family, and found that the rate of
participation in a recycling program was greater for people whose
social circle already recycled.
Social norms can play an important role in guiding the decisions we make in situations of uncertainty during everyday life.
This assumption is the basis of the Planned Behavior Theory (TPB; Ajzen, 1991).
According to the TPB, the most direct precursor of our behavior would be the intention to implement the behavior itself.
The results confirm the plausibility of distinguishing the constructions of
subjective norm and local norm and show that TPB can be successfully applied to the study of recycling intentions.
The separation of household waste aimed at favoring separate collection is one of the ecological behaviors most studied by research in psychology.
During the last decade, the purchase of organic food as incresed.
Theory of Planned Behavior reporting that the main role is played by the individual attitube in the purchase intention, followed by subjective
rules and behavioral control.
The benefits that man has always drawn from nature and from the ecosystem, of which he is part, risk being no longer available, it is estimated that in 2025 there will be 1.4 billion more people in
cities around the world, with each person which will produce more than double the current average solid waste. Therefore embracing sustainable
behavior could bring significant benefits to the current environmental
situation and especially in the future.
