Cuphead Review - Just how HARD is it?!

This episode of Rand's Indie Spotlight is all about Cuphead. Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.

Cuphead is DEFINITELY one of the hardest games I have ever played but it didn't turn me off, it actually made me continue playing until I completed that boss or level!

I think the words, "creativity" and "originality" get thrown about way too much in gaming. However Cuphead fits those descriptions perfectly.

I would consider my self relatively bad at games, just beating the game not going for s rankings or anything i died over 3000 times, i must have died over 100 times on each boss, but i enjoyed the whole playthrough, i felt great just knowing i got it done even though im terrible at it, i hope to see more from MDHR, and i hope to see games that offer challenging gameplay like this

Look at the artstyle, the enemies, the music, the expressions of those creatures and... things, and the way how that flower guy changes his expression as he attacks you with his spikes underneath you, as well as that blue ball thingy! I will get this game! I absolutely adore the Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck (and so on) movies and cartoons from Disney, so I know I will love this. I wonder if there are any really big bosses in Cuphead, which make me grin like the biggest dumbass ever, maybe even make me laugh like one ;) Great review!

Very good game. Hats off to the dev studio. I spent a good portion my weekend playing this and loved it.

I can say, the dragon boss made me want to die, I'm pretty sure that half of my deaths in the game so far was at that boss.

Sounds like they took a page out of nex machinas book with playing on the easier setting and not being able to see the last 2 bosses or stages.

Great review rand. Man this game looks hard but you convinced me to pick it up. Hard platformers are so rewarding to play. Reminds me of my childhood.

Buy and Support the game too ALOT of work and detail and we are getting it CHEAPS :) not being mugged off like Sony did with No Mans Sky $60 price tag!

Excellent review. Your issues were pretty much my only issues as well. Love the legit challenge and that is something that gets more points from me. Though I dont care about numerical scores. Ive just been beating bosses in regular mode and havent gone for better rankings yet, but am interested in going through expert mode next. Not sure how that unlocks yet.

The interface is not great for replaying bosses or just experimenting with different loadouts on the fly. Its annoying to have to go through a fairly long loading screen to get back to the overworld, just to make a slight change to my gear loadout. Luckily, when you die you respawn almost immediately at the boss, which is great. Anything less would be very annoying and kill the flow of the game.

Im on the third isle so have yet to see the end. Good shit.
