Oakland School Officials Set to Address Resistance to Planned Closures

The Oakland Unified School District board will have a meeting Friday evening to address fallout over planned school closings. Jocelyn Moran reports. (2-18-22)

What’s the purpose of extending if it’s just going to close anyway, might as well close at the end of this school year so kids can start next school year at there new school that they will eventually be at.

Who decided to close the schools? And why?

Got money for police but not schools. Got money for a new stadium but not for schools. How about a school attendance mandate. Make kids attend school. Violent crime would diminish greatly if this was done. But this they know already thus the closing of schools.

I feel like Oakland is changing and parents have to be realistic about that, like gentrification is increasing and school enrollment is decreasing because of the lack of affordable housing and parents leaving the bay for more affordability. So I feel like the school district and parents need to be real about the times we live in and how things will change going forward.

So funny that Oakland has the money to build a new ballpark but is trying to cut funding to education? Ha! You must be joking!
Oakland school suffer so much already! I am a graduate of Oakland, and let me tell you, it was a struggle! I was lucky to graduate!
Some classes don’t even have textbooks! Teachers used to copy the book and pass out the copies! There is no music, or extra curricular programs to help keep student off the streets! The solution is not to close schools! We need more funding for materials and teacher pay! Teachers are so underpaid, and in our community it’s so important we take care of them! They are literally influencing and guiding our next generation! We should be putting all the resources we can Into educating our children! The problem is the system is designed to keep the poor down, why do you think finances are not taught? Why wouldn’t they teach children about stocks, bonds, taxes etc? Because if they taught kids to be financially responsible and free there would be no one to oppress, there would be no low class because people would understand the importance of generational wealth, specially in our community which is predominantly black!
