This is a really interesting insight into someone choosing to (at least this is my interpretation of this sequence) sign up with the Combine and how that can affect not just them, but the people around them. Just from this sequence you can see that these 2 meant a lot to each other and that this decision is destroying that connection.

What's interesting is of course the person doing so isn't exactly keen (I mean look at his body language), so much as, like many collaborators before him; he wants better treatment and it is being offered for service (which is why they offer it at all).

This must be pretty early after the invasion given that they're wearing civilian clothes as opposed to the 'Citizen' jumpsuits and it makes me wonder; did our willing (if uneager) volunteer; stay in service long enough to run into 'The Free Man'...

Talk about ending in a cliffhanger, in a world that is pretty much hellish to live in with danger all around you choses are limited. How ironic that the few choices that are available to them can have unforeseen consequences...
