The general public consensus over 30 years ago was that all you needed was a spacesuit with an oxygen supply and enviromental protection from extreme heat and cold. Later on, the problem of radiation became more and more apparent. Space is even more dangerous. Even the moon missions had some shielding with the earth as an umbrella. Beyond our magnetosphere, all kinds of nasty background radiation would bombard interplanetary astronauts ruthlessly.

You can protect yourself from radiation. However, if you've ever seen hazardous material suits, you know how bulky they are and meant for short-term exposure only. Radiation penetrates everything, although lead can disperse the particles fairly effectively. If you've had an X-Ray you know of the leaded mats they place on you to prevent overexposure.

Lead is heavy and has its own inherent toxicity, but nowhere near the danger of radiation. So lead wrapping our space travelers' craft seems plausible.
