"Pumping" a diesel throttle, genius.

I bought a Dewalt Li-ion heat gun a few years back just for this purpose. I'm up North and it makes cold starts on the old stuff without glow plugs or heaters a ton easier.

When I worked in the Yukon Territory we had D-8 K CAT's. In the winter we'd build a fire under he crankcase and allow the motor to begin warming BEFORE we tried to start hem up. It seemed to be effective.

Old worn out diesels can be hard to start in the cold. But why go through that much trouble? Get some starting ether and put antifreeze in the engine so you sleep calm in the cold nights!

Pumping the pedal is useless, the engine needs heat in the combustion chamber.
And a gasoline engine with a carburetor would already be hopelessly flooded.
