Dad was going to be a Super Mutant in Fallout 3 #shorts

In The Pre-War Collector’s Edition on Page 484, we learn that Dad’s story was originally going to be a bit different. Now we know, you escape from Vault 101, rescue Dad from Vault 112, and help him with Project Purity, which ends with Dad sacrificing himself to save you from Colonel Autumn.
However, before it was changed, you were going to find Dad, not in vault 112, but vault 87, where he was trying to find a Garden of Eden Creation Kit, but Dad, having been exposed to FEV was subsequently transformed into a Super Mutant. Upon finding him, he would be hostile and have to be fought, after which he would beg the player to end his life and to finish his work without him. This version was ultimately changed, as it was too similar to another game released two years prior, Prey, so they rewrote the story and now Dad gets to be a hero. But which version do you prefer?

Liam Neeson supermutant begging me to kill him would have been quite the experience

If Fallout 3 had NV's speech system it would have been amazing to make different kinds of skill checks to convince your father to that his life was valuable and to join you. He could have been a companion like Fawkes and then realized at the end that his mutation would allow him to safely enter the purifier, still allowing him to be a hero and show that mutants have a place alongside humanity.

I think Fawkes was supposed to be "Dad" as a companion as it kinda explains how his backstory is completely unknown.
Yes, we know he was a Vault Dweller but that's all Fawkes remembers; as if the developers went, "We have to change the story but we already have this unique Super Mutant model! Quick! Make them two separate characters and just give the mutant an amnesia backstory!"

A supermutant with Liam Neeson's voice would have me on the floor

That would’ve been dark just having to kill your father

I think it would have been cool in this instance, to defeat him, but have the opportunity to *SPARE* him, and ask him to come with you, so the two if you can fix the wasteland together. He could get the GECK for you (like fawkes does) and then as you head out, you run ahead and get captured by the Enclave as normal.

As you escape Raven Rock, DAD appears near the interior cell’s exit or outside the door, showing your father’s bond with you is so strong he had been fighting tooth and nail to come to your rescue. So he’d be a companion character.

I would like the idea that James didn’t die in the Jefferson building and was instead transformed into a Super Mutant.

This would be definitely more interesting as you would share the hero title with your dad rather than your dad now being the hero. Sure, in F3 you’re also a hero but you’re rather the assistant of him, the true hero.

Now I wish that Coronel Autumn injected FEV into his body to survive the radiaton inside the chamber. Then at the end we could’ve had a Frank Hoorigan kind of battle against him

They were so afraid of being labeled as unoriginal and then turned around and made the most predictable, milquetoast plot of all time. As an entry point for so many people to this series that could have been the perfect way to introduce players to the concepts behind FEV.

Make him into Fawks so he can have an epic last stand fight against a squad of Enclave and Autumn and surprise the player in broken steel dlc with the news that his is still alive in the Adams’s Air Force Base and you can save him or doom him

This story personally sounds better then what we got in the end

I guess that would be a small improvement over what we got (James being the true hero of the story).

Even better, you walk in and Dad has melted into the machine after being exposed to FEV.
"So....do you join the unity, or do you die here? JOIN *DIE* JOIN *DIE*

Love this content from the Collector's Edition... I'm trying to source the collector's guides for NV and 3, so in the meantime, this is really cool to see.

Would be an interesting outcome for our dad. Like it’s a random chance to find him in Vault 112 or rarely making it to Vault 87. Only to have to be the one to kill your father. But if you have high enough science and medicine you can help him keep some of his methyl’s faculties together with the help of Fawkes. Maybe he’d even join Fawkes saving you from Raven Rock with a mini-gun of his own.

Tbh I like how it played out dad should of left a message to you tho to let you know he’s not just running away and you should be able to make the choice to follow or stay in the vault until it all goes to shit and it’ll bring you out of the vault and make some events pass that you can do when you leave like normal

Mannn that would have been in my opinion, perhaps a little better. It would’ve been so bitter sweet and a gut punch discovering James has become a victim of mutation

I honestly kinda like the idea of a mix where he becomes a super mutant who is at a stage similar to Virgil from fallout 4 and he gets to be a hero before slowely mentally declining before the end where he has the option to go for an experomental FEV cure or when facing the enclave or something but as he begins to go for it he decides to save you instead losing the last bits of humanity dying as he goes on a rampage

If he did turn super mutant it wouldve changed the game ended he wouldnt have died from radiation. But also gives much more realism to the dangers of radiation... not even dad was safe this world is not safe, the vault was like paradise even with a bad overseer
