Throughout World War 2, Winston Churchill gave a number of speeches that galvanized the British public in the face of extreme hardship and convinced them to keep fighting that good fight against Adolf and his cronies.

As an American, it's hard to admit that, imo, Churchill was the greatest leader of all time and all countries. He was British when the country had to be it's British-est!

Simon! I am LOVING this channel!! 💖
Short, sweet and to the point. Tiny pieces of a much bigger picture, leaving the curiosity peaked and a dive into history necessary. I immediately go to Google U to learn more. Great stuff.

Simon, I had not heard the speech, I had read it but hearing Churchill was amazing.

Can I ask you to put together a video on where the Queen was during the bombing of London?

Great video! Thank you.

Hearing Sir Winston has motivated me to have a cigar and a whiskey...what else could you do?

In the movie “The King’s Speech” Churchill tells the king he had also struggled with a speech problem. If true, it makes me wonder if the cigar in his mouth was helpful.

The Bulldog just had to gnaw on something even while speaking live to the public didn't he?

It must have been a terrifying time...knowing that they were completely alone in Germany's cross hairs. Great video, thank you!

When did Britain go from having the king/queen calling the shots to an elected official running the show? Seriously. I really would like to know.

Churchill was very much a case of the right man in the right time, if he'd been a MP at any other time he'd never have been selected as PM and if somehow he had managed to become PM then he'd probably either have been a unremarkable and unremembered PM or he'd be remembered as a awful PM and far from considered one of the greatest Britains ever. He was absolutely the perfect man for the job and the times. It's not surprising he didn't last in office after the war finished as even though he was perfect as the leader of the country at war his personality and abilities just weren't suited to the long, hard drudgery and slog of rebuilding the country, Europe and the rest of the world. This isn't a slur or criticism as the 2 things, leading a country at war and rebuilding everything after, needed 2 very different types of person to be in charge. Churchill was very much of the old school Victorian minded, British Empire, fight or die, never, as he said himself, surrender type and his pride, belief in the British, the old stiff up lip, there's nothing a determined and focused Britain can't accomplish especially when the whole country pulls together as one, he was also extremely sure that the country would all pull together and do their bit. Very much that old generation and class that still carried the unquestioning, Victorian belief of British superiority, the mighty British empire that can't be broken and that we were in some oddly devine way, gods chosen. That view, even then, was outdated, deluded and, if not for the situation that the World found itself facing, stupidly old fashioned but it was exactly the right basis for a leader needing to lift and lead his country through a war we looked like we could and probably would lose.

The fact is that without that belief and the determination his attitude gave our country and people we could well have lost or even conceded defeat before the fight, which would have almost definitely have meant that Germany would have won the war. I'm fully aware that Britain didn't win the second World War on their own, not even close, no country did or could have but if we'd fallen at that time then who knows what would have happened but it would have left Germany free to concentrate on the Russian front instead of being split in 2 and could have also possibly seen America not joining the War, at least in Europe and just deciding to defeat Japan and only worry about Germany if they needed to.

I know it's all wild speculation but what is definitely true is that the British people gained a massive amount of pride, determination, belief and faith in themselves and our country from Churchill himself, something they probably wouldn't have found or gotten from any other leader. Not only did he speak great and the right words but he did it in a way that made others believe what he was saying. He believed and it was obvious he believed and wasn't just saying he did. He truly did believe in Britain and its ability to stand against any threat due to his old school Victorian Great British Empire, Upper Class personality and yes ego, meant that the public and most importantly the Armed forces, and not just the British ones but all the various nations that fought in the Battle of Britain, who were doing the fighting also believed in themselves and each other and instead of entering the Battle of Britain thinking they'd already lost because of how out numbered they were entered believing totally that as long as they did their duty, as long as they all stood together and fought with all they had then we'd win. You can't underestimate the effect that that belief and trust in the fact that each and everyone of them would do their uttermost and their duty must have had, for one thing its far easier to risk your life if you believe its going to make a real difference and that doing so will lead to victory and that you're not just throwing it away.

Yes, he was/is a man amongst men. I believe that Britain did itself a disservice when he was replaced immediately after the war. Discarded like trash. Used and tossed. Disgraceful.

Could you do it report on Tiburcio Vásquez? The only thing I know about him is he was a bandit 1800 and they named Vasquez Rocks after him. Vasquez Rocks is where they shot some episodes of the old star track series and also The Flintstones movie
