DIY Platform Bed Easy & Cheap - Darbin Orvar

I decided to use a single sheet of plywood. A the home improvement store I had the two major cuts made for me so I could get the plywood in the car and so that the rest of the cuts would be smaller and easier to manage.

I was able to come up with an extremely sturdy and pretty nice looking platform bed that I ended up painting white, and that in the future could be improved even more with a nice diy headboard. I used a table saw, and drills to complete the project but you could easily just use a jig saw or circular saw.

There really aren't that many cuts and otherwise you just drill and screw everything together. I used mostly 1 1/4 inch screws for the legs and top attachments to the rails. I did not use any glue, but it would not hurt if you did.

I made this bed so that anyone, at any skill level could make their own bed. You can take this design and add other wood, or even hardwood to make it even nicer. I hope a lot of people can add their own design features to make it for their space.

Base: 1 @ 38 x 74 inches (96.52 x 187.96 cm)
Long Rails: 2 @ 5 1/2 x 74 inches (13.97 x 187.96 cm)
Short Rails: 2 @ 38 x 4 inches (96.52 x 10.16 cm)
Legs: 8 @ 4 x 13 inches (10.16 x 33 cm)

I love this idea because it's so easily customizable. Paint it any color, make it lower or higher, use a nice wood and just use your beeswax finish, add your tufted headboard, or turn it into a daybed. Perfect weekend project for those of us (and we are many!) with a spare bedroom being used as a storage closet.

Popular Science, the magazine, used to have plywood projects way back in the late seventies.  I did a few of them and really enjoyed the project ideas they had.  Really saved a lot of money in making a lot of my furniture.

Thank you! We bought 2 sheets of pre-finished Birch ply (finished on both sides) and made 2 beds. Plywood, screws total about $100 CAN. We made a couple minor adjustments to measurements and screwed int he legs from behind so they are hidden. Our golden, Louie, supervised the project in our back yard.

Inexpensive, easy, and yet still very nice. I like it. Great job. I just finished making a bed for my college son. Different design but I find it very satisfying building things for my kids, especially beds as those they can take with them for a long time.

This might be exactly what I need for my camping kit.
I could store it upside down to use as a storage box while traveling. Then, take the gear out, put it rightside up, and BAM. Bed off the ground.
