My English father is usually quiet and laid back but he turns into James bond when it comes to paying for dinner.

The fact she took the towel off to be “herself” was fantastic! I love these two!

As a fellow Asian from Thailand, learning how to pay behind your guests back is an art and skill in itself.

"So anyway, that's how I ended up tackling my mother-in-law on her way to the toilet at an upscale restaurant"

One time I "went to the restroom" and paid the bill for my grandma who I was visiting. When I dropped her home she had left a $50 bill on the seat of my car 😂 i can't win she's too good

That last "ok" sounded so miserable 😂

All of this literally happened to me in Japan, particularly the toilet trick. Then when *I* tried pulling the toilet trick with a different group, the waiter said they'd already been instructed not to take any money from me.

I managed to pay for my cab once with a Japanese person in the car by literally having the cash in my hand and shoving it into the driver's face before he stopped to let us out.

I considered it a major triumph.

That is so spot on! My French husband and I are tired of fighting over the bill in public with my Vietnamese mom. At the end of our trip, we buy her a bunch of gift cards to her favorite places, including restaurants where we go whenever we visit her.

😂I noticed from observing my family that it’s the same in China. Before I knew it was a cultural thing, I innocently suggested to my dad to just split the bill as a good compromise. The horror on his face 😆

So true! My boyfriend is Vietnamese and would pay for all our dates when we first got together. I finally told him that I was going to pay for one of our dates and he said “okay…I need to go to the bathroom”. I didn’t know the trick then 😅.

**edit: we’re now happily engaged after being together for 4 years and spoil each other relentlessly 🥰!

My husband is eastern European and they also fight over who pays. There was one time my husband covertly sent me to pay while he argued with our guest over who would pay.

🤣🤣 My family in a literal nut shell 😂😂

My mom will always whisper in my ear at dinner with my aunt and uncle or grandparents

« Hunny I’m going to pretend to go to the bathroom but I’m paying for the dinner, ok? »

Then my mom comes back and tells me that my granddad already paid 😂😂

I just love how universal some of these stories are. I have seen Asian people, latin people, south Asian people—legit get physical about trying to pay for the bill making the US American staff looking hella confused haha
