Immortal Beloved - Music , What Is It ?
Featuring - Kreutzer Violin Sonata in A Major, Op. 47" - "Kreutzer"...
It was in the Kreutzer that the turbulence of Beethoven's suppressed feelings erupted with full artistic force. This astounding work was not only a musical means to depict his pain and confusion, but the vehicle by which he Beethoven signaled to the world, and to himself, how he planned to surmount his distress.

Ludwig van Beethoven: Do you like it?
Anton Felix Schindler: Shh!
Ludwig van Beethoven: I cannot hear them, but I know they are making a hash of it. What do you think? Music is... a dreadful thing. What is it? I don't understand it. What does it mean?
Anton Felix Schindler: It - it exalts the soul.
Ludwig van Beethoven: Utter nonsense. If you hear a marching band, is your soul exalted? No, you march. If you hear a waltz, you dance. If you hear a mass, you take communion. It is the power of music to carry one directly into the mental state of the composer. The listener has no choice. It is like hypnotism. So, now... What was in my mind when I wrote this? Hmm? A man is trying to reach his lover. His carriage has broken down in the rain. The wheels stuck in the mud. She will only wait so long. This... is the sound of his agitation. "This is how it is... ," the music is saying. "Not how you are used to being. Not how you are used to thinking. But like this."

Such a beautiful scene, one of my favorite movies, not only for the theme but the acting as well. Gary Oldman is one of my favorite actors.

When I saw this at my first time, I felt this Beethoven’s word is the most essential part of this film.

There are several wonderful scenes from this film. This is my favorite one and I am a musician who went to Peabody. Music is "the sound of his agitation" and Gary Oldman is a chameleon - a true actor unlike so many others who simply play themselves all the time. I LOVE Beethoven and this little snippet is one of the best pieces of film ever. This is the definition of real music. I'm not kidding. I also love Simon and Garfunkel and Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin and Jesus Christ Superstar. I play classical and folk and jazz and rock; but this clip = music defined! Thank you for posting this! My 2nd favorite scene might be when a prospective bride entices him to try out a "new technology" and spies on him and then sneaks up on him. I can tell you I would react the same way he did

This wonderful composer might as well been at my cribside in Germany when I was a tot. I heard the most wonderful music in my life when my dad put on his Beethoven records. When I saw the movie, this scene. I understood exactly what Beethoven was saying because I saw the glorious Fatherland in my head listening to his works in my little bed all those years

The great Beethoven's quote about what music does is unfortunately not really Beethoven, but a shortened version of a quote from Tolstoy's "The Kreutzer Sonata and Other Stories":
“A terrible thing is that sonata, especially the presto! And a terrible thing is music in general. What is it? Why does it do what it does? They say that music stirs the soul. Stupidity! A lie! It acts, it acts frightfully (I speak for myself), but not in an ennobling way. It acts neither in an ennobling nor a debasing way, but in an irritating way. How shall I say it? Music makes me forget my real situation. It transports me into a state which is not my own. Under the influence of music I really seem to feel what I do not feel, to understand what I do not understand, to have powers which I cannot have (...) And music transports me immediately into the condition of soul in which he who wrote the music found himself at that time. I become confounded with his soul, and with him I pass from one condition to another (...) For instance, a military march is played; the soldier passes to the sound of this march, and the music is finished. A dance is played; I have finished dancing, and the music is finished. A mass is sung; I receive the sacrament, and again the music is finished."

Charleton Heston could play anybody in any genre and remain an outstanding version of himself. Gary Oldman can play anybody in any genre and be outstanding in a clever disguise. Actors who can do it all are very rare gems.

The first music I ever remember hearing was the scherzo from the 9th symphony.

Music as we understand it would be impossible without Beethoven.

I don't recall Beethoven listened to the black Mozart playing the Kreutzer Sonata. He is a little before Beethoven time and has great reputation as director of Paris Opera.
