Japan’s Post Box Under the Sea

When the small Japanese seaside town of Susami needed a tourism boost, an unlikely resident came to the rescue: the town’s postmaster. Together with the local diving community, former postmaster Toshihiko Matsumoto helped establish the world’s first underwater mailbox. Those willing to make the plunge can strap on a wetsuit and mail letters from 30 feet under the sea. Incredibly, dive shop owner Hiroaki Yamatani descends each day to collect and deliver these letters to the post office. To date, almost 38,000 letters have been sent from under the sea.

Honestly, I'm surprised that they need more tourism - the aerial shots of the town and it's coastline are stunningly beautiful.

it would be really cool if instead of using the post office like a regular one, you could dive down, insert your postcard and receive someone else's post card. that way you could learn about someone else's journey, an added surprise/souvenir to your experience.

I know Japan is not perfect, no where is, but seriously, Japan is such an interesting place filled with beautiful, smart, creative, and interesting people. Unlike a lot of other people today, they don't constantly steep themselves in negativity, which unlike a lot of other people, one would think they would, given what they experienced just a half century ago, with their whole country in ruin and destruction during the post-war period, a lot more so than what you see happening around the world today. I truly have a deep and fond respect for Japan and Japanese people. They give me hope in humanity, and the world has already become a slightly better place with all that they've created.
