The Seagate 8TB ST8000DM004 is SMR, not CMR. Those drives are absolutely terrible for anything NAS and ZFS/RAID related.

EVERY SINGLE Seagate HDD I have purchased in the last 20 years, internal and external, has failed in the first year. I've lost complete confidence in them.

Just to let you know, that particular Seagate drive you have is an SMR drive. TrueNAS does not like SMR drives. You should be using CMR drives. This has nothing to do with your drive failing... but thought you might not be aware of TrueNAS and SMR drives.

Barracudas are notorious for failing. Get Seagate Iron Wolf Pros or Seagate EXOS. 💪

AFAIK: Barracuda is for desktop use, not designed for RAID systems.

“After a few weeks”…hope your other disks don’t die in that timeframe.

They died because they are Barracudas.. Those are not 24/7 drives. Most likely Seagate will reject the warrantee claim when they get it as well. You need to buy their NAS drives. :) Common mistake… These drives are rated for 4 hours a day for 1-2 years.. Nothing more. :)

Barracudas are not meant for nas use with multiples in one enclosure

I had 4 iron wolf 6 tb drives in my NAS. Brand new... After a week I started getting error reports from my NAS about the drives. I immediately bought replacements from Toshiba and RMA the Seagate drives to Amazon. Haven't had any problems with my Toshiba drives. Been 4 years now.

yea isn't that SMR drives gotta have CMR for nas

Worked at a PC repair shop back in 2011-12; we had an area for dead drives. Seagate needed it own section because we'd have 20 of them for every 5 WDs, and 1 or 2 of the other brands. Now these were generally oem stock and budget drives, plus there is something to be said about market share, but after seeing that, I decided to avoid Seagate where I could.

I hope your Tuna Scale System is doing good.

A drive failing that fast is a DOA issue. Drives typically fail in the first few weeks, or after a lot of years of runtime. Even if this drive type is not made for this specific kind of use, it should not fail this quickly. Try to reason DOA with the store that you purchased it from.

This is why I don't bother with Seagate drives at all.

The data from Backblaze clearly shows that they have the highest AFRs out of all of the HDD manufacturers.

Don't buy same model for all your drive. If there is a munufacture default, you have more chance to have the issue on all drive. Personally I have bought 2 x 3 HDD on second hand, I use only 2 HDD in my truenas and other are waiting if one of my NAS HDD died. My truenas is tuning 24h24 for more than 2 years and no disk have failed.

It's been discovered that since Chia farming has been unprofitable lately in China, 3rd party resellers have been selling these Seagate hard drives as new. I think as of yesterday, I read that now Ironwolf drives are affected, too.

another thing you should be observant about is making sure the hard drive you use is a CMR. NOT SMR. SMR is notoriously bad for ZFS. Be especially careful for wd. Afaik for WD, the WD red PLUS are CMR. But if there is no PLUS, check carefully to be sure its NOT SMR.

This is why you go for a nas dedicated drive like ironwolf, they're designed to operate 24/7 long term as many nas would. Use a drive produced for consumer pc's which will often hybernate for much of it's life is risky.

For 8 years I only buy barracuda HDD, have like 10 of them now, mixed of 2tb and 4tb, they're still all alive in my NAS, storing 25 years worth of company data. What you need is faith, and a backup is preferred.
