Kiwi and tirects are flightless birds from New Zealand. They resemble mammals in some ways, moving on the ground and having feathers similar to wool, with a body temperature of 38°C. Although kiwis cannot fly, they do have wings, but these are tiny—no more than 5 cm long. These rudimentary wings are hard to spot beneath their dense plumage. Kiwis are monogamous birds, forming pairs for two or three mating seasons, or even for life. About three weeks after mating, the female lays one egg in a burrow or under a tree root. Speaking of their eggs, they are famously large. A female weighing 2-3 kg lays an egg weighing around 500 g. Kiwis are long-living creatures in New Zealand's green, damp forests and can live up to 60 years if they aren’t caught by local predators. They also make eerie calls at night.
