**********

This disaster documentary focuses on the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913–16.

The Karluk, pioneered by Vilhjalmur Steffanson, is a tragic story of an arctic expedition gone horribly wrong. While attempting to push east, north of Alaska, the ship became stuck in the ice and was forced to drift for hundreds of miles. Ultimately, stranding those aboard in the middle of the harsh ice floes of the arctic ocean. This ship wreck is one of the most tragic stories of expedition into the arctic.

Love the style of this video. I’m always drawn to these early arctic and antarctic expeditions. In particular I read about Shackleton’s failed expedition to Antarctica when I’m feeling down. There were so many moments during their journey where I thought “surely things can’t get any worse” and yet they did. Their ship was crushed by ice, camping on top of ice floes that seemed to break up just when the men managed to get a bit of rest, traveling to two different islands in the roughest seas on the planet in basically old school life boats, facing gale after gale. And yet everyone survived largely due to Shackleton’s leadership and Captain Worsley’s amazing seamanship. When things seem really bad in my life and I feel like I can’t go on, I remember the crew of the Endurance. And so, I endure.

Great channel, can’t wait to see what you come up with next.

A relative of my grandmother was a friend of William MacKinlay, the expedition’s meteorologist, and left me the pocket compass which he carried, and which was recovered with other missing possessions from the thief who was shot. I later gave the compass to the Clydebank Museum, in MacKinlay’s home town in Scotland. It is 110 years to the day when Karluk sank.

When I hear the word arctic, I do not want to go any adventure in that area. Me and cold weather are not friends. This stuff is why I will stay on land, in my bed, under a blanket.

Great video, I never cease to be amazed by these explorers in such inhospitable conditions and the distance they travel mostly on foot in the desire to get back to civilization.

Excellent video and a nice length. Having read the book years ago, the little Inuit girl was called Mugpi and she settled in southern Greenland. She was still alive in her 90’s when the book was written and had no recollection of her time in the Arctic on Wrangel Island. There was a ship’s cat which survived and future generations of kittens it produced were apparently much sought after.

Wrangel Island could have been named by this expedition as it was all they seemed to do there, but the toddler and cat were prioritised by the men, who always made sure they had food, which eventually became plentiful when seabirds bred on the cliffs during summer. It’s now a protected nature reserve, though I don’t expect it’s a popular holiday destination with crowds of people threatening the wildlife.

There is a note I would like to clarify that was pointed out to me by one of my subscribers. In the video, I mentioned that the Nimrod expedition was the first mission to reach the magnetic south pole in Antarctica. This is incorrect. They were attempting to be the first but did not succeed.

How do you feel you would respond to being stranded in the middle of the arctic? Do you picture yourself staying and following orders or leaving on your own to try to escape?

There are multiple tragic stories of explorers in the arctic & antarctic during the 19th & early 20th century that all seem to be very similar in what they face & the fate of most, if not all of the crew. Absolutely unimaginable what they went through.

This story is one of survival. The books by Jennifer Niven and Buddy Levy are very interesting. The colorful characters on this voyage make it an unforgettable story.

I love humans ability to be so curious! I know in Australia that people walked into the dessert to record Aboriginal peoples language that now no longer exist.

What an incredibly terrible ordeal for that crew. A painfully slow drift into the unknown. Awful tragedy. Great video yet again.

Taking a wood hulled ship into the Arctic is treacherous. The pack ice that moves can exert pressure on the wood ship hull, and crush the hull inward.
