Systems Modelling

In order to do systems change, we have to understand whatever it is we are trying to change as a system, and this requires that we actually create a systems model of it. Most of us do not see systems, we just see things, and as a consequence, we have designed our world based upon this component-based vision. We might say that we have a transport system, a health system, or a political system, however, our actual model of those is typically not a system at all, it is just a set of parts; a university is just a set of departments without any understanding of how all those parts fit together, to produce a complete learning experience for the student.

this is pretty epic to watch during the government shutdown. Trump thought he could figure things out simply by looking at the options available to him, but lacked an understanding of the context of decisions in the system as a whole, only able to focus on a small aspect of how it might help him achieve his one goal at the moment. Are any of our presidents really systems thinkers? Did obama ever truly understand the way his policy would be expected to affect the healthcare system within the context of the economy? I have my doubts...
