Who am I? A philosophical inquiry - Amy Adkins

Throughout the history of mankind, the subject of identity has sent poets to the blank page, philosophers to the agora and seekers to the oracles. These murky waters of abstract thinking are tricky to navigate, so it’s probably fitting that to demonstrate the complexity, the Greek historian Plutarch used the story of a ship. Amy Adkins illuminates Plutarch’s Ship of Theseus.

Does anyone else look in the mirror and sometimes think "Wow, I'm this human."

Asking “who am i” makes me feel like I physically cannot ever answer this. It feels like my brain isn’t equipped to process any further. I look into the mirror and I dissociate. I have a lot of days I dissociate. I truly think a huge part of why is because I don’t do enough in my life to feel fulfilled. I was so lively as a kid and I feel like I let go of that as I started overthinking and getting caught up in the things that don’t matter, having now to chase that my “self” again. It’s a feeling I can’t explain, but i know I have to start seeking more discomfort and doing more in my life to feel closer to my self.

The person who made the ship example is really a genius. I wish I could talk with him today.

When I was a kid, I decided that I was a doughnut hole.... meaning that I am nothing, but who and what I am is defined by things that are not me, just as a hole is nothing, but defined by the doughnut which is not the hole.  Yeah, I was a weird kid.

These days, I think of myself more as a wave pattern.

I've heard this story numerous times, and I love it. Philosophy is awesome. The ship started being a new ship the moment even 1 plank was replaced.

This leaves me with more questions than when I opened it

Ok. When each one of your cells die, a part of you dies with it. When you're completely replaced, it's a new person who thinks it's you in every way. It has all your memories, all your habits, all your thoughts. Like a clone. But the old you is dead. Gone. Replaced. So live, live now, in the moment before you are gone too.

Buddhism provides answer for this kind of question really well.
You cannot define yourself because there is no such thing as 'I'. Your body is not the true nature of you. Your mind cannot be the trueself since it changes all the time. Your name, job, residence, and so on can never define you by itself. However, all the things mentioned above, when all the things that compose you gather it is you. So, your true identity is the one acknowledging that there is not a single thing that can define you by itself but, at the same time there is not a single thing that is not part of you.

So instead of debating about whether the ship mentioned in the video is a or b, just embrace the fact that the ship is a and b at the same time while both cannot define the ship alone. Dont try to define things with one feature or point of view.
