An American company is growing chicken in a lab in a bid to solve the challenge of feeding meat to the nearly 8 billion people on this planet.

Editor's note: Good Meat is not producing thousands of liters of chicken every few weeks, but they are producing enough chicken to service their first restaurant partner and will be quickly scaling up.

As a stem cell biologist, I think that it is remarkable how quick this kind of research has progressed. Besides being close to the first commercially available lab-grown meat, there also have been successes in making transplants. In principle, we can make stem cells from a skin sample of a patient and then create tissues (or organs) by adding certain compounds at defined points or 3D print them (I made videos about these topics). In this manner, bladders or beta cells (for diabetes patients) have already been made and transplanted in early clinical trials! So excited to see what else will be possible!

I would become a “vegan” and stop eating meat from living animals if they’re able to make this happen

That's a lot of plastic for a couple of chicken nuggets.

When I was 7 or something I wrote in the school newspaper that in the future we could grow meat like plants. And it would be more efficient because you could grow it bigger with less waste because you didn't have to keep an animal alive. And it would be less cruel because it wasn't an animal. I always wondered why it took this long till we finally got to this point. I guess the answer is that the meat industry has one hell of a lobby...

They didnt say a word about the other advantages of this, besides not having to kill animals.... The fact that it takes orders of magnitude less land space, water, elektricity, and produces much much less greenhouse gases are much greater advantages to me. But not a word about climate change due to meat consumption in this vid. I do also have one point of critique, packing every single nugget in its own bag of plastic seems quite exessive to me. But apart from that, this do be the future

All you have to do is look into the past at the manufacture of goods. It was almost always the case that cost was the limiting factor at first. But marketing pressure pushed the technology relentlessly and the cost of the manufactured good tumbled. There's no reason why this won't happen with "lab grown" meat. It will become factory grown meat and it will out-produce farm-grown meat sooner rather than later.

If it’s safe to eat and not poisonous I’ll eat it. I just want food

Once the insane prices come down, absolutely. Why wouldn't they be able to take over? Knock it off with the selling at 4x the price of the real stuff...

I would like to know about the nutritional profile in comparison to live chickens. I don’t see bone marrow produced.. Is there heme iron?

02:55 If lab grown meat suffers ethical acceptability while meat from culled chickens don't, I'd have lost trust in human intellect.

This is an amazing idea, the conditions that chickens are raised in is entirely inhumane and unethical. Taken also with the fact that 99% of people would not eat meat if they had to kill it themselves, or after seeing the mass production conditions speaks volumes to the state of current society. We sacrifice animal needs and living conditions just to accommodate for the growing populous; no more! Lab grown meat is a food future I support and can’t wait to see happen! Ethical farming can be done, but no big companies seem to have any intentions of scaling down any time soon. Great video, great idea!

Can you use chicken stem cells to create more chicken stem cells and then make meat without needing to extract more stem cells from chickens? If you had an adequate quantity let’s say in a viable storage facility which is used to continuously produce the stem cells required - could you then scale production?

If greed is not the motive than countless people can be cured of hunger and disease.
