Admittedly, if you changed the evolution method my personal favourite for this would be Elekid. It feels on par with starter pokemon as a baseline and Electivire is just so badass.

Pichu as a starter would actually be pretty challenging and fun. An uphill battle is better than simply steam rolling all the npcs.

I think the Shinx line is the perfect starter line since they do share the same level numbers for each evolution, which are in the teens and 30's scenario like ALL starters excluding Pikachu.

I think Mareep also makes more sense because of the larger and frankly more diverse move pool.

besides, pikachu got the starter treatment already, twice at that, so that's another good reason to not give it's family out as a starter

It also doesnt help Luxray that it has a great attack stat but almost no physical moves. It’s only good physical STAB is Wild Charge which it learns at level 80

That mareep is fluffy and i want to huge one is always why i loved mareep. A lot of static in that fire but i bet it soft and mareep is just so adorable. Flaffy and ampheros are too.

Mareep's wool is full of electricity, so if you hug that fluff, you will be zapped

Shinx, Luxio and Luxray are based on light so It doesn't really make sense for them to be dark type

I used to think luxray should be dark/electric type but people have given pretty good reasons why lu ray shouldn’t be dark type.
The only reasons why it should be is the black fur and that it learns bite and crunch but the reasons why it should just be electric outweigh the reasons for dark/electric.
