'Insulting China?' Netizens debating over the trendy aesthetic bias towards slanted eyes
Показать описание
An advertisement released three years ago by a Chinese snack brand giant has caused a phenomenon on Internet.
The issue is whether the image of a woman in the advertisement is insulting to China.
The model in the advertisement has a pair of slender single eyelids, which is different from the common female appearance in Chinese local advertisements.
“Insulting China" comes from the squinting of the eyes that European and American countries make when they show discrimination against Asians.
This is also the stereotype for East Asian women in the West: elongated eyes, single eyelids, low roots, and high cheekbones.
The ads. was criticized by some netizens for catering to the aesthetics of the European and American markets. Some netizens feel that aesthetic diversity should be viewed calmly.
This is not the first time in recent years that a model's appearance has escalated into a political controversy.
Chen Man, Chinese mainland photographer, has been accused of maliciously stigmatizing Asian women for her photographs of an art exhibition for a luxury brand.
Chinese-American actress Awkwafina, who earlier this year became the first Asian-American to win Best Actress at the Golden Globes, has not escaped controversy.
