Are you team wasabi or team no wasabi? 👇

Tennessee has small farmers growing wasabi. It's apparently doing really well. I was served the real stuff at a Japanese restaurant in downtown Chattanooga. It's the absolute bomb.
Ed. It's a place called Tokyo, off of Huston, in Chatt. They make something as simple as Miso soup taste great. Try the Katsu, as well.

I always thought that wasabi tasted a lot like horseradish, this blew my mind

Edit: I was informed that wasabi is in fact a type of horseradish. So it absolutely makes sense.

As far as the flavor profile, they are essentially identical. So much so that the Japanese call horseradish “white wasabi” colloquially. So if you want to have real wasabi for the authenticity of it, go for it. But for all intents and purposes the cheap stuff works just fine too.

As a Japanese citizen, it was terrifying looking at the amount(of wasabi) they were using 😂

*Edit: I love you all I just want you all to have a good day today!*

Can confirm. Last week I went to a fancy restaurant on vacation and they were serving sushi. The wasabi that came with it tasted so much better and more authentic then the store bought stuff. I usually never eat my sushi with wasabi but for that night I did and really enjoyed it.

I’ve had it once in a sushi place in Las Vegas, I know because the visual texture and taste was far different, not spicy like the “wasabi” you usually get. Was extremely good. The bill was like $300 so makes sense it was real

There are definitely Sushi Restaurants utilizing real wasabi in the US. The standard restaurant in a strip mall is likely to use the horseradish though.

When you realize everything you eat would be at least 50% more healthier if companies and costumers didn't cared about their color.

Actually they add wasabi powder to the mixture, it’s also really hard to ship wasabi plants because they go bad and they’re not mass produced

If you put wasabi in a Japanese translation it will say horseradish. Had no idea it was a real plant. 😯

Not just in the us. Most places won’t have it unless you pay a lot of money, even Japan

Not just America, even in Japan the imitation wasabi is a lot more common than the real deal, and almost everywhere outside Japan the wasabi is the imitation product.

There is a small farm in Oregon that is growing wasabi. You can order a kit from them that comes with the root and a special grater to make the paste. It's a little on the pricey side but if your heavy into sushi like I am, it's worth it. Only problem is once you try the real thing you won't want the shitty paste you get from the grocery store.
