Explained - What is the difference between S1 and S2 Slave modes on camera speedlights/flashes?

Simply put, when the flash is set to S1 mode, ANY flash (including the pre-flash) will set off the speedlight flash. In S2 mode, the pre-flashes will NOT set off the speedlight flash; only the final, actual flash will set off the speedlight flash.

The first time I used optical slave mode with flash, I was not exactly thrilled with the results. I used the camera's built in pop up flash to trigger a speedlight. And the resulting photos had a distracting orange light that was likely caused by the pop up flash (which I had to clone out with Photoshop.) And by the way, my camera was a considerable distance from the subject with a telephoto lens and yet I still got interference from the pop up flash. I can't even remember if my speedlight had a choice of S1 or S2 modes. I wasn't happy with that orange light contaminating my photos so I got a flash trigger and never used optical slave again. Good tutorial, by the way.

Many today photographers are lost on this.
