a lot of people complain about how annoying Neil can be when he’s talking about something he’s so passionate about, but i personally think it’s infectious. i love hearing him talk

Bro, space is so fucking cool, like come on man. Every time I hear something new it just gets more awesome.

If anyone's wondering, Einstein's equaltions added a very small 1/r³ term to the gravitational force equation, which only has a significant effect near massive objects.

I've come to realise that everything has a limit or range per se. Like the reason new laws are established and previous ones are absolved isn't always because they are wrong. They just don't work outside the range which they were made for.

Newtown's laws are simplified Einstein's theory of relativity, you can say. It works mostly just fine. We don't care about the decimals of number if we're just driving a car that's not even half% of light speed

I love the attention to certain TTRPG elements like concentration saving throws (Simon lost his concentration when he saw Edgin and Holga), levelling up while at camp, detection or stealth checks, Holga having a super low charisma score, Edgin improving his persuasion, the red wizard displaying Detect Magic, Simon displaying his amulet of Speak to the Dead, Edgin with his Bardic Inspiration…
It was beautifully written and wonderfully acted!

No, they still apply, it's just time goes faster for mercury than us, hence the visible discrepancy

The Evolution of Physical laws it not one of replacement, it's one of improvement.
Like the evolution of the wheel:
First stick a disk on an axis. is that a good wheel? probably not, but it's a start.
Then we get spoked wheels, which are lighter and more flexible, not breaking as often. those are sufficient for most tasks even to today,
then we get grease on the axis to remove friction and eventually go to ball bearings to get even more efficient.
Does that invalidate the original? No, and it may be too expensive to put every single wheel on ball bearings. so you can use "older versions" up to a point, and when you need more out of the construction you go for the higher tier.

Newton laws: Basics for speed, velocity, etc

Einstein theory of relativity: Update for faster speeds, velocities, etc

Science is kind of like sharpening a knife. You start on the low grit and carve out the rough shape of your edge. Each new scientific breakthrough is like going to a finer whetstone and getting an even sharper edge.

I’m actually learning about this in school rn😭

Every thing is like this, in a never ending fractal of different types of knowledge.

I hate to break it to Neil, but they had plenty fast objects.

They had rockets as far back as 1200s and 1300s

Even Leonardo da Vinci talks about chaining a rocket with a cannonball to extend its distance by first shooting the cannon ball and then have the rocket go second stage.

Newton's law of gravity was not invalidated since it works in certain situations. Einstein extended the law to include broader parameters. Now we need laws that work in black holes which have hyper extreme conditions.

Sun gravitational pull on mercury is 0.06271 max, its not big enough to disturb mercury orbit shape

Exactly! That's why we study Newton's laws at school and not jump to general relativety😭
Because it works!

also a very interesting thing. if you try to use quantum equations for macroscopic objects, they simplify to newtonn's laws.

always my arguement when people say "we cant make or destroy energy" no currently we dont think we can, we dont have to rewrite everything because 1 thing works different, same with time travel, faster than light

I remember being 4th grade and seeing him for the first time on national geographic in a stupidly shaped space ship, i love this man
