A little while ago I got my mum to try out Windows 8 which she called "Cartoonish", "Childish" and "Like the first version of Windows as if every version ever released has been an improvement on windows 8". Well, I decided to put her theory to the test and actually get her to try out the first version of Microsoft Windows "Windows 1.0" released in 1985.

Lets just say... She partially took back what she said about windows 8 ;)

Tasks Given:
- What time is it?
- Write and save a text document.
- Have 3 programs running at once.
- Have the clock running along with your other programs.
- Turn off your computer

In many ways she wasn't wrong. The MS Dos executive is very similar to the Start Screen. The way that "metro" apps behave, taking up the full screen rather than being in a window, having interface elements hidden, etc., is a like like windows 1.0 (or even DOS). The way you have to tile/stack app windows and resize them against one another via a slider is also very similar to the non overlapping windows of version 1.0.

Yes, when they were making windows 7 (I followed the development activity) they looked at all their previous operating systems for features that they could use. Snap was one of those features but another was the icon task bar feature. Notice when she minimized windows in this operating systems they became an icon in the "task bar"? That's why windows 7 uses Icons in the task bar ;)

The start screen (with the modern UI apps) as well as a speed improvement is the new thing windows 8 introduced. She also dislikes how they removed window transparency.

In 1985 this was state of art operating system. My first computer was a commadore vic 20.  You cannot compare 1985 to today.

This legendary vid will be 10 years old. To celebrate that it would be funny to make a video of Digital Research's GEM, the first PC version! ahahaha

Yes, nice spotting ;) I wasn't gunna be crazy and corrupt my boot loader by attempting to install it on another partition when I planned to delete the operating system right after recording the video.

So that's why every window in windows has a hidden menu at the top-right corner...

So amazing!! This looks so archaic, but back in 1985 this was state of the art. Your mom is a lot better with computers than my mom though! My mom can barely even use her Windows 7 PC. So the only time its ever on is when I'm at her house lol!!

Yes. For old windows and Mac operating systems I use vmware to emulate them on my windows 7 12 core 3.33gtz processor with 12 gig of ram. For Linux operating systems I boot the natively on from a live USB.

I like the relation you have with your mom, she looks very kind and patient. In the 80's one GUI was very popular : Geoworks ensemble. You may give a try to your mom.

Lol this channel started when she tried windows 8 for the first time and hated it. She said it was the worst operating system in the world so I got a bunch of old operating systems to see if she would hate them more. Then the channel almost became a pure linux distro channel until I decided to get her to try out a variety of operating systems modern and new from windows, Mac, linux, beta/unreleased operating systems and more.

Windows 3.1 is the Rosetta Stone. It's somewhat simple to figure out (for me) from 7, 8, and XP, and it trains you for 1.0 logic.

From Wikipedia:
"Microsoft Windows 1.0 is a 16-bit graphical operating environment, developed by Microsoft Corporation and released on November 20, 1985.[2] It was Microsoft's first attempt to implement a multi-tasking graphical user interface-based operating environment on the PC platform. Windows 1.0 was the first version of Windows launched. It was succeeded by Windows 2.0. Microsoft ended support for Windows 1.0 on December 31, 2001."
