Ukrainian forces are mounting a new push in the south of the country. The Russian Army said repelled a Ukrainian attack involving several hundred soldiers near the town of Orikhiv, in the Zaporizhzhia region. It is one of the areas where Kyiv has been carrying out its counteroffensive. An enlarged Ukrainian force, with western-trained troops and western-supplied armoured vehicles, hopes to advance south to sever a land bridge to Crimea. The Russian defence ministry stated Ukraine conducted a massive attack with three battalions, reinforced with tanks.
Moscow said all attacks were repelled, and positions were held. remember, Russian commander in the region, major general Ivan Popov, was sacked after his criticism of military leadership. For Ukrainian forces, the sacking has added to the sense that this may be a moment of Russian vulnerability in the area.
