Modifying a Dixon quick change parting blade holder

I'm modifying a useless parting blade holder for my new Dixon QCTP in to a holder for a small boring bar. It was a bit of a struggle, with a view hiccups, but overall I''m very happy with the result. And I'm sure this modified tool will be a very useful addition to my lathe turning tools arsenal.

FYI: I am trying to make a some money for my youtube hobby through the Banggood affiliates program. Follow the link below, buy something you NEED, and I'll earn some commission. Doesn’t cost you anything extra. You're basically taking money out of Banggood's pockets and putting it in mine :)

Other affiliated stores that might make me rich :)

Great result in the end, after you did the review on the face mill some time ago I ordered myself one straight away with a mt3 arbor, the face mill has arrived with the inserts but no arbor as yet, apparently it’s on back order but there still advertised as if they have them in stock, the first inserts (gold ones) I was really surprised with the finish considering the heat of the chips and sparks, bloody good inserts I think, Thanks for making my Saturday night enjoyable mate, ATB Matty 🇦🇺

BTW that face mill works a treat. Enjoy your videos because you're not afraid to try unusual methods and to alter/modify parts. Keep up the good work!

Nice Job.
You could use your fancy oven to harden it again ;)
The softening comes from gradually cooling the part back down but you probably knew that.
For your other parting tool holder you could make a packer to raise the tool post a bit. So long as it provides full support it should work well.

I'm doing the same as you re-using a blade holder to put boring bars into. But i went another way after facing the tool holder, I used a block of mild steel bolted onto the cleaned up face, then bored through this to hold the boring bar. That way i can use the same holder for different bars by just putting another blank on the front and drilling to size.I don't have a kiln so i just put it on the gas hob until cherry red and let it cool slowly. That scale stuff might be the bluing chemical they use, mine gave off a lot of smoke when it was heating up which really smelled bad.Keep the ideas and videos coming, great stuff.

You might want to space that qctp up by 8mm or so, it'll allow a greater range of tools.

Tell us about the wooden shoes sometime. I think that I understand that they are traditional, but how does that play out in modern times? Are they used like steel toe boots? I assume this because I saw them when you were chain sawing. Can you make them? What kind of wood is it? It's cool and different, and something to learn.

for filing hard stuff..
10Inch 120 Grit Diamond Needle Files Metal Glass Stone Shaping Tool banggood ID: 1090180 i used the formerly available 180 grit 10" diamond file.. i don't even know where my other files are anymore.. this is all i have .. might change your life. you might want to see if they have any more 180 grit versions in 10" or 254mm.

You did a nice job! That setup holding the block for milling was making me cringe. You needed something on the back side to support that block so it couldn’t slide back.

Could that holder work if using it upside down? Bore height adjust bolt thru and tap it full and put knob on other side.

Hello Sir.
By the way it sounds, looks like only 1 or 2 inserts of the face mill are cutting.
It should not sound like a pneumatic hammer. It should be like a drum roll... Maybe I’m wrong ;)

I use the same toolpost and holders (the bigger size) and I am quite pleased with them.
They are very well finished and work just as well as the 'real' ones. I bought about 20 extra holders for my set up and I am really pleased with that setup.

I believe that 'blue nano' stuff should be renamed 'blue-bin-insert'. I have tried a few as well, out of pure curiosity and they are not worth wasting your time on. Though I do believe that the damage you had (after one use) is because your face mill doesn't take the inserts all at the same height (or the inserts are not consistent in size)

As a final thought... you do know that Herman Buitelaar sells boring bar holders for that toolpost at the price of 19 euros, right ?? LOL

Tooldes!

When facing the front face of the holder, Why didn't you just fit the new QC tool post and use that to clamp the tool holder at its lowest point (So its bottom edge was supported on the compound, and the tool post would keep the holder square)? I'm sure the loading on the tool post wouldn't be high enough to cause any damage, And you'd have had the holder solidly supported in 2 planes rather than 1.

See you persevere and you get success!! Well done. I didn't think you were going to succeed until the kiln made an appearance, did you buy it just fit this one job? I ask because it was obviously brand new as it was so factory clean, and just one cycle of heat changed all it's colour. I think if I were doing that I would try to coat the piece to be softened with something to prevent the serious oxidation that took place. Something like a borax wash. .there must be something on the market for such operations. Were you thinking of re-hardening the tool holder now you have made it butter soft? It think if used in that state it would wear or warp in use as the tool holder pulls it tight. Only use and time will tell!

After softening the metal you biproduct on the holder is called scale, if you did it in vacuum then you would have no scale.
