★★ WHAT THIS VIDEO IS ABOUT★★

In this video we are going to learn all about voiced and unvoiced sounds in English. Voiced sounds are produced with our vocal cords (also called vocal folds) vibrating. That’s what makes these sounds louder and gives them volume. All vowel sounds (monophthongs and diphthongs) as well as a range of consonants are voiced in English. However, we also have a group of unvoiced consonant sounds in English. We will have a look at both groups with example words. Finally, we are going to have a look at ‘whispering’ as a mode of speaking when vowel sounds are ‘devoiced’. At the end, there is a little test for you!

Very useful, thank you. As a native Cantonese speaker, we have no concept whether a word is voiced or unvoiced (only aspiration or not).

Hi Billie,

Could you explain difference between
ɔː and əʊ sounds? Please.

I know əʊ is diphthong, but I can not distinguish them.

Billie, your teaching style is so clear. I watched so many videos but yours is a cut above the rest. May God bless you. Just one explanation is needed. I tried to feel the vibration but sometimes it is not clear when you put your hand on the throat. Can you help?

i’ve always wondered why my accent almost completely dissapears when whispering, watching this made me realize my main problem is that i’m really bad at voicing certain consonants!! i have never really been able to work on my accent because i didn’t know the source of the problem, i knew i have problems with vibrating my vocal cords but i didn’t realize the extent of the problem so i couldn’t work on it!! now i can finally try to train myself, learn how and when to voice consonants, abd finally become much better and more confident in my pronunciation!! do you have any tips? thank you so much

A QUESTION: If our vocal cords DO NOT vibrate when we whisper, so how on Earth can we still pronounce voiced sounds? I can totally produce the Z sound, for instance, when I'm whispering, so how is it possible to produce voiced sounds without vocal folds vibration?
