Vlad The Impaler is a real historical character to Romanians. And he's a real hero to Romanians because he stopped the Ottomans (turks) from invading what it is today southern Romania.

He was the prince of a region called Wallachia (Valahia in Romanian language).

He is famous for impaling his enemies, the turks and the corrupt aristocracy of his time.
He once impaled 10, 000 turks.

All the vampire shit and the fictional [Count of Transylvania] is just fiction invented by an Irish man.

The name Dracula comes from Draculea.

'Drac' in Romanian nowadays means devil.
But 600 years ago that word meant dragon.
His father was a commander of an order of knights called 'The Order of the Dragon'.

So in archaic Romanian, Draculea means 'Of The Dragon', or 'Son of the Dragon'. Or simply put it means 'Son of the Commander of The Knights of the Dragon Order'. It was just a name to identify his filial relation to the 'Knights of the Dragon' commander, his father.
You see, in Romania, in rural area there's still this rule regarding children.
When an old person approaches a child,  he might might ask "Of who you are?". His is not asking your name, but your family name, your father last name.
Nowadays this mode of asking young people to which family they belong, is mostly used by old people. This tradition in a couple of years will probably cease to exist.
So the 'Draculea' name goes in that sense.

He was demonized by some germanic writers of the time because he conquered the cities of Brasov and Sibiu, which are located in southern Transylvania at the border with Wallachia.
At the time the rulers of these cities were rich saxon merchants that had to pay taxes to Vlad The Impaler, after he conquered the cities.

So the Germans wrote shit about him, being cruel and drinking blood and all sorts of invented crap.

Regarding the werewolf stuff, there is a weak connection with Romanian lands.

The Dacians, the ancestors of the Romanian people, that lived in the area of modern day Romania, then called Dacia, about 2000 years ago, when they fought, their soldiers were using dead wolves heads and skin as some sort of headgear.
So they appeared as wolf men to their enemies. Their battle cries were also very savage and wolf like.

The Dacians respected the wolves as powerful animals. Also they were a monotheistic people that believed in one god called Zamolxes (Zamolxis).

They welcomed death because they believed the spirit never dies, and when the body dies, the spirit goes to their god Zamolxis.

That is why they were fearless in battle and were happy to die fighting protecting their lands.

In the end, they got conquered by the Romans, and so by assimilation the Dacians became Romanians, they got latinized.

Well finally Vlad gets some nice treatment from the movie industry, hope this movie depicts him as the leader he was, and not a blood sucking monster, he was a king that protected his country, cruel as he was, he was a king, a human king not a vampire

Too bad it's rated PG-13. Any movie with blood and gore should be rated R. It still looks really good though.
