The Boeing 787 is an innovative and groundbreaking aircraft in so many ways. From its mix of composite materials and comfortable cabin pressure to its large, electrochroamatic windows. But how exactly does the technology behind that window dimmer switch actually work?

I hated it when the United cabin crew dimmed the window when it was still two o'clock in the afternoon. Yes, my flight to Tokyo still had 10+ hours to go, but you can't expect all passengers to take a long nap that early.

I personally much prefer the old school mechanical shades. So, reassuring at night watching those red or green navigation lights out on the wing tips knowing the wings are still attached.

I have flown alot but this year flew from Heathrow to Philadelphia and was amazed awhat happened. One minute it was sunny and brigh and then i looked it was exactly like midnight i didn't realise the crew did that without a word. I had to ask about that
Excellent 👌

Without question it's the best view in the sky. The size really does make a tremendous difference. Even dimmed photos are pretty cool.

The dimmable windows in the 787 is one of my favorite features on this aircraft!

While I’ve tried it out when I was at the Boeing Museum in Everett, I’m hoping I can use that if ever I fly on a 787! 😁

I am Cabin Crew, I love them and I never open or shut them without permission of the passenger. The only time i would ever adjust without asking is if all the windows are closed in an area and the person at the window is asleep with it on bright. They sleep, mouth open and others can’t. And if they awaken and open it, I leave it that way or ask if they would mind darkening it some. It’s your window, your choice, and it is possible to look out at different levels of dark or light. You cant do that with a conventional shade.

I flew on the 787 in 2014??? It was great. Plus it was a first commercial flight of the plane for the airline. I found the blinds to work well but as mentioned in the video at that time the system did not block out all the light but it was pretty good.

I've found them more of a problem than a benefit on the 787. The flight crews can control them and they don't dim enough a lot of the time.

The first few times I used them, I did not understand how long / short to push the buttons. The results was frustration about where the opacity ended up. That written however, once I understood how they worked, they allowed for just the right amount of light for me. One other thing, I like that the F/A's can control the opacity during sleep time, because on other (many) international flights I have been on, while trying to sleep, there is always "that guy" who insists on having there shade up, while the rest of the shades are down.

Lack of personal control is an issue. it's like an enforced curfew for everyone. Not all passengers want to spend 8+ hours asleep especially with uncomfortable economy seats

I just don’t like the flight attendants on some airlines can choose to have full control over the dimming of the windows, could miss some really cool views that way, if you want it undimmed, “sorry you are out of luck”.

I love those windows. I could look at the sun like looking thru a dark filter. really amazing. And for trans-Pacific flights, Japan Air's economy class with 2-4-2 seating is the best. No one is more than 1 seat away from the aisle

Never been on flight with 787 to experience it, but I was on a 787 a few years ago at an airshow and thought it was cool.

I like the two layers of shades that are on the Emirates A380 over the single plastic ones on 737s. Hope to try out the 787 and this window on a trip soon.

I've never been on a dreamliner. I personally prefer the window flap to be up at all times and have the natural cycle of light and dark.

Loved the windows on my recent flight on American 787 to Japan.

I have experienced the early and then the later versions. To me those work well.
