As a VW Golf fan I’m disappointed in the new mark eight so this looks like it might be more up my street. I may be in touch with Tony next Spring. Looking forward to a more in depth review Joe, specifically regarding the gearbox. Keep up the good work.

I specced both this and the GTI up to pretty much full spec. The Golf was £45k with the 128ti being £42k. It’s mad.

It would of been good to see one last edition of the 1 Series with the 3 litre engine with 380hp or so and called the M145i

Just one more thing - I notice from TRL’s photos that this has really legible and clear round dials and not the awful digital setup with the anti-clockwise rev counter. This looks so much better and I’m sure is much better to use.

The more I look, the more I'm seeing a Hyundai N in this black special paint job. Nice with the red accents. I see some comments against this theme. Haven't seen enough of the interior to add anything more.

Smart move by BMW. Not all markets need xdrive and the weight, cost to come with it. Smart-looking and surprising price differential vs. golf gti. Never would have imagined that back in the '80's.

I have ordered one. Delivery beginning March. You can get all the red deleted (which I have). Ordered in storm bay colour. £100 less per month than GTI on PCP.

Damn Joe last week you took us back with the mk1 S3 and this week the E46 compact! Loved my compact, proper RWD hatch and cheaper and smaller than the coupe and saloon counterparts. Definitely underrated

Why BMW don't just employ you direct is completely baffling ! Great film Joe, love the insight on this model. One issue, £34, 000 IS TOTALLY BONKERS AND WAY OVERPRICED the VW Golf is just a more stylish place to be. I Don't know who does modern BMW interiors but they need to up their game massively, they are almost from the last decade.
