I like the quote from Ovid, "What we do in our leisure time reveals who we are as people." It's similar to the idea of character, in that, we are who we are when no one else is watching us.


One of the common questions people ask each other upon initial meeting is, "What do you do?" or "What is your job?" or "What do you do for a living?" Oftentimes, the person who asks any variation of these questions forms value judgments based off of the other person's answer(s). All a job or career really is is the role you play in society. Each one of us can be thought of as an actor or actress performing on stage, the stage of the workplace or society. People certainly have various identities and roles.


I prefer the question "What do you do in your spare time?" because it is more flexible and open-ended. Your spare time can increase or decrease and you can always add or take away activities as you see fit.

Writing is one of my favorite hobby’s. However, the hobby that gives me the most enjoyment, is just being in my shop with all my tools building something. It doesn’t even matter what it is. The simple process of taking raw materials, then cutting, shaping, and assembling them into something useful, is for me an incredible experience. The irony is, I’m a builder by trade. I build custom homes for a living. But if I could do exactly what I wanted, I’d be building musical instruments, log furniture, picture frames, knives, wind chimes, or even jewelry boxes. It really doesn’t make any difference. Because the joy in creating is the same for all. One of the best parts though, is when I give what I’ve created to someone else. No words are necessary, the smile on their face says it all. Of course, I do get paid for it. But, the appreciation is worth more than the dollar could ever be. Doing your best and being your best will always bring the best back to you... Have a Great Today!

Running is my hobby. The challenge i have set for myself once or twice a week is to run without listening to something like music, podcasts, etc and just be present. It's more difficult than you may think but wow I feel great afterwards.

Just did tai chi in the park in Brooklyn TODAY! It's Jan and 60...so a unique experience I chose not to waste in my apartment! 💖 Made my own video for my own channel. And said what I needed to say. As a bartender now I see a lot of people who waste ALL their leisure time drinking. It's sad.

My hobbies are running (6-8 hours a week), reading, playing an online card game and almost daily meditation. I would only call reading and my card game hobbies though, the other two are imo essential life practices.

Btw, just bought your ‘Obstacle’ book that’s been in my wish list for a few months now. Really interested in learning more about the Stoic philosophy and practices.
