It was a hoot. Back in college I had a friend with a pair of Klipsch Heratics (sp?) their sound was amazing even at very low volume. At high volume you coukd seriousely hear them 10 blocks away…
Fast forward 30 years… I drove my wife nuts talking about those speakers for 30 years… she thought I was insane. Just after Christmas that year Our Bestbuy had a clearance sale, and Don of a gun, a big set of their Klipsch RF speakers was on the sale… I know they aren’t the greatest in the world, but they are solid… and on this clearance thing, they were half off. One set of honey… sad puppy eyes… and we were driving home with a set of Klipsch…
After a slight hernia I got them set up in the living room and fired Billy Joel I think… and out came a sound like I have never heard before. It was like he parked his Grand at my feet. You could tell exactly where in the room he was playing. Wife Walked in sat down and didn’t move for hours. The concert was amazing. Better than live to be honest.

You perfectly describe how I listen to music, with my eyes closed and visualizing the musicians singing and playing their instruments. No one around me understands my music listening experience. Thank-you Steve!

The room with the mountain wins just for the mountain alone.

Hi Steve! Completly echo your how to listen tips. Never tried back to the speakers, looking forward to trying that out later this evening! I would also like to add something that works for me - it's a mental thing rather than a physical one. When listening I mentally focus on specific instruments and follow it for a while. This kinda shuts out the other instuments - like zooming in one conversation at a noisy party. Then walk around the soundstage (mentallly) and listen in on each one in turn. This does two things - 1. makes me aware of all the detail that's going on when I come back to the piece as a whole 2. If there's an instument missing or too weak to follow, I know somethings wrong. Enjoying the show! Keep 'em coming!

The great thing about this hobby is how different and diverse the viewer systems are . Loved the Mountain View of system 5.

Another wonderful essay on applying change in one’s listening skills to get the most from the music and ones gear. I always find that you Steve, do such a wonderful job in presenting and helping to imagine things in ways so people can enjoy hearing music they didn’t expect or could not understand! Heck Yeah! I turn my back on music and listen to it as helps me to get a different perspective and trust the music…thus these experiences have, for me, over the years helped the appreciation of the “hard work “ waiting to be heard. Again, spot on sir!
PS I love your, wonderful reviews regardless of what it is ..keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing you again soon. Thank you, Steve.

Your suggestion of imagining the people playing the music is so spot on. That’s my absolute favorite thing to do, it changes how you listen to music and the experience for me at-least, is magical.
I have to be in the right frame of mind but when achieved it makes me happy 😃

Cool ideas. I like to suggest folks listen intentionally to individual instruments, especially the bass, and then the whole ensemble. Zoom in and then zoom out.

Great tips! I have always listened to the speakers with my back towards them every time I walk back to my sitting position from resetting their position and toe in over and over and over. 😂

Great ideas Steve. Thanks for the reminder. Picturing the musicians is cool. Seeing them play on video is also cool. And a cool thing about speakers that are easily moved, like the Magnepans, is how they can moved around so easily. And the dipole nature off them makes it very interesting. Sitting between them can be quite amazing. Facing the ears or edge-on to the ears. Wow the sound is different.

Thanks with the audio systems at the end. Amazing stuff out there.

I stream a lot of live Grateful Dead recordings on internet radio, hardwired to a fiber optic connection. You get that unmistakable party vibe. Plenty of work for the subwoofer. I love it in the morning with strong black coffee.

I totally agree with what you said about visualizing the performance with either closed eyes or dim lighting. I just close my eyes when I'm analyzing the sound and it allows me to focus on the imaging and tone much better.

Your comment about how hearing speakers from another room can be revealing rings true. I once had Apogee Stages and it sounded uncannily like a live band was in there, even if the door was closed and I was listening through the closed door. I never heard that sense of reality with any other speaker I owned, and can't ever recall that in audio shows. (timestamp 2:55)

Very interesting because I started turning my back on my speakers back in the 90s when I bought a pair of Advent 25th Anniversary loudspeakers. I had them raised up and, with back turned, they put you in the studio or concert. I also stand in the far corner where you can immerse yourself in some heavy bass.

The fellow with the valley vista view is one lucky man. What a place to sit and enjoy your morning coffee while listening to music.

The names of all the gear in the first system are by far the coolest. The fog. Ha! Awesome
