Title: He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother
Artist:The Hollies
Album: He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother
Year: 1969

Lyrics:

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where, who knows where
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We'll get there

For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another

It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on the way to there
Why not share

And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

He's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

Reminds me of my baby brother who had Down Syndrome, passed away in 2021. I helped mom take care of him when he was born & I was 15 y.o. then. We were very close, now I'm missing him terribly that I suffered from depression. Hopefully, someday I'll be with him again.

I lost my brother to cancer and this song resonates through my very core! He was a giant of a man, giving as much as he could to everyone. There is not a day that goes by that I do not think of him ... and miss him! He would have done everything for family, and I would have done everything I could have for him! RIP Bro!

I met my little sister for the first time, 2 days ago. She's 54 years old and I'm 66. She sent me this song afterwards. O the years we've missed. I am so so blessed. She's a beautiful person. I look forward to going down the road of life with her, together. She's my sister.

I lost my brother suddenly on 2, 10, 2012 and tears still flow every time I hear this song. I miss him every day. He was my best man in my wedding and was the best man I've ever known. I treasure all the memories we shared and hope one day we can be together again. God bless you, my friend, my brother and my confidante.

It was years before I was able to listen to this classic without crying. The beauty; vets help vets; so for what reason can people not truly help each other. The strongest are they who ask for help. I did and my brother and sister vets helped me realize my life was beginning from scratch. Now this classic is one of the cornerstones of my life and it's just fine with me~~~Rock on my brothers and sisters

The Hollies were my mum's favourite. This was her favourite song after Stranger in the night by Frank Sinatra.
Margaret Hann, her maiden name, my beautiful selfless mum, passed suddenly and unexpectedly as I held her at 11.25pm 31 December 2024. I will always ❤ LOVE you, Mum. More than any words can express . Until we meet again wherever that may be, I know that much

“He ain’t heavy, Father… he’s m’ brother.”

Those iconic words have symbolized the spirit of Boys Town for decades. But many people don’t know how it originated.

Back in 1918, a boy named Howard Loomis was abandoned by his mother at Father Flanagan’s Home for Boys, which had opened just a year earlier. Howard had polio and wore heavy leg braces. Walking was difficult for him, especially when he had to go up or down steps.

Soon, several of the Home’s older boys were carrying Howard up and down the stairs.

One day,  Father Flanagan asked Reuben Granger, one of those older boys, if carrying Howard was hard.

Reuben replied, “He ain’t heavy, Father… he’s m’ brother.”

But the story doesn’t end there.

In 1943, Father Flanagan was paging through a copy of Ideal magazine when he saw an image of an older boy carrying a younger boy on his back. The caption read, “He ain’t heavy, mister… he’s my brother.”

Immediately, the priest was reminded of a photo of Reuben carrying Howard at a Boys Town picnic many years before. Father Flanagan wrote to the magazine and requested permission to use the image and quote. The magazine agreed, and Boys Town adopted them both to define its new brand.

Nearly 75 years later, the motto is still the best description of what our boys and girls at Boys Town learn about the importance of caring for each other and having someone care about them.

“He ain’t heavy” is relevant beyond Boys Town, though. At some point in our lives, most of us have needed to be carried by someone, metaphorically speaking. And, at some point, we probably carried somebody else. We’re human. We stumble. And we look to each other for help when we do.
