President Charles de Gaulle was notoriously distrustful of the US since WW2. FDR loathed him back when he tried to assert himself as leader of Free France.
A consequence of France leaving NATO United Command is that Nato's HQ had to be moved, because it was actually in Paris. They moved to Brussels.
