Six Day War begins

In response to a build-up of Arab forces along its borders, Israel launched a preemptive aerial strike against Egypt. Jordan soon joined the conflict, but the combined Arab forces were unable to match Israel's military might. Over six days of intense fighting, Israel seized control of the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, the Golan Heights from Syria, and the West Bank along with the Arab sector of East Jerusalem, both previously under Jordanian control. By the time a United Nations cease-fire was enacted on June 11, Israel had more than doubled its territory, including taking the Old City of Jerusalem from Jordan.

Despite the U.N. Security Council's call for withdrawal from all occupied regions, Israel refused, instead permanently annexing East Jerusalem and establishing military administrations in the occupied territories. Israel indicated willingness to return Gaza, the West Bank, the Golan Heights, and the Sinai in exchange for Arab recognition of Israel's right to exist and guarantees against future attacks. However, in August, Arab leaders met and adopted a stance of no peace, no negotiations, and no recognition of Israel, focusing instead on defending the rights of Palestinian Arabs in the occupied territories.

Eventually, Egypt negotiated peace with Israel, leading to the return of the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt in 1982 in exchange for full diplomatic recognition of Israel. Egypt and Jordan later relinquished their claims to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank to the Palestinians, who began "land for peace" talks with Israel in the 1990s. A lasting Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, however, remains elusive.

The "Three 'nos' of Khartoum": NO peace, NO negotiation, NO recognition.

False. Egypt blockaded the international waters of the Tiran Strait and the Suez Canal on May 23, 1967. This was a repeat of the 1956 Suez Crisis. The treaty that ended the 1956 crisis stipulated that another Egyptian blockade would be construed as a declaration of war.

The Israeli counter-attack began on June 4, 1967.

Following the fighting, the Arab League issued "the three no's of Khartoum" = No peace with Israel, no negotiations with Israel, no recognition of Israel.
