Since I played the 1940s whistling ghost dad in this scene, here's what director James Wan explained to me as we filmed the scene.
Mr. Wan explained that I should look like I was whistling. "Don't worry we've hired a professional whistler to actually do it."
The whistling is what got Patrick's attention. That's why I stop whistling when I see the light from his lantern.

Mr. Wan explained that when Patrick came by us on the couch we should be completely still. We are not dead but stuck in The Further a dark place where many souls (Like me, my wife, and my twin daughters) are damned to remain forever, a place which is not meant to be tread by the living, and time does not work as it does in the real world. We had once lived in the house that The Lamberts had lived in. So we pretend to be dead.
The Further mirrors the material world, so houses, objects, and landscapes may appear almost identical to their counterparts in the real world. However, distances are very tricky, since great distances can be covered in a relatively short amount of time.

So, since Patrick's character is looking for his son we have to "play dead" as he passes with the light. Unfortunately, my "wife" blinks, giving us away. When he looks at me again my newspaper is quivering. He hears a gun being cocked and discovers one of my daughters in the dining room. He says, "Please..." He hears 3 gunshots. When he returns to the living room, one daughter, my wife, and I are dead. Really dead. He sees that the other daughter shot us. For a split second, he thinks we are smiling at him and then he heads up the stairs still looking for his son.

I love this scene in the movie, not only for how scary it is, but for the actual story behind this scene. Apparently after reading the wiki for this film, the girl who shot her family is being punished for doing so and her punishment is that she has to keep reliving this moment over and over again. But the reason why she is smiling and when they all smile together is because since it's happened so many times, they have grown to like it. I just love the psychological plot behind this film. I've not seen the second one yet but I can't wait till I do.

I am delighted with so many people who were not only nice enough to watch our movie, but who complimented this particular 2-minute scene. Yes. I am the "1940's whistling ghost dad" in the film Insidious. And I am 76 and still living!

So the lady tells him, "Hey, when you're in the astral world, keep a low profile, they can smell your aliveness and will get curious." so what does he do? He shoves about 900 lumens worth of lantern light in their faces, not to mention getting right up in front of them so they can practically smell his breath. Good job. A+

This scene scares the fucking shit out of me. This and the grudge attic scene for some reason. Very demonic and eerie like silent hill. This is true purgatory and it's scary as fuck imagine replaying this every time in infinity

I like how the man was specifically instructed not to attract attention to himself, and the first thing he does is yell for his son, walk around with a light and then proceeding to hold it in people's faces.

I wasn't a fan of insidious but this scene was truly terrifying. A backstory of this scene can be made into a film alone.

Why don't they do a "Chapter" on the smiling family? I'd be curious... just putting that out there. Wouldn't you?

I am now 76. Finally, Moose, the extras handler, asked me to go to the big house, which appears in the film as House #1, and to report to the living room.

Inside, it was dark and smoky, smoke machines, not cigarettes. To the right, as I came in the door, was a dining room table that looked like someone got up and left during a three-course dinner. It reminded me of The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland.
There were guys in shorts and t-shirts, the crew, and Patrick Wilson, the star. He came up and said, "Okay, Lary. We’re going to work."
The strange woman who had been assigned to be my wife was there. I had tried to make friends during the first day, but she would have none of it, so we never did speak to one another. I don’t know why.
The two girls playing my twin girls looked similar but, close-up, they looked nothing like each other except for the make-up.
Finally, a slim young guy came up and said, "Hi. I'm James Wan."
He was a calm, easygoing man who constantly addressed me as "Sir." He asked me to sit on the screen left side of the couch facing the fireplace with the girl playing one of my daughters to my left. He stationed my wife behind an ironing board off to my right.
Wan explained that in this scene Patrick Wilson, who was trying to find his son, Dalton, would come in and pass in front of us with a high-tech lantern, trying to see if we were alive or dead.
He cautioned us to remain as still as possible and look straight ahead; something that became exceedingly difficult to do as the evening wore on. As we would do the scene, again and again, the crew continued to pump smoke close to the floor.
Mr. Wan explained that I should pretend to be whistling at the beginning of the scene. "Don't worry. We've hired a professional whistler to do it on the soundtrack."
The whistling is what gets Patrick's attention. That's why my character stops whistling when I see the light from his lantern.
The director explained that as Patrick first comes by us on the couch, we were not dead according to Mr. Wan, but we are stuck in The Further, a dark place where souls like me, my wife, and my twin daughters had to remain forever. It’s a place not meant to be tread by the living, and time does not work as it does in the real world.
In addition, we once lived in this house that The Lamberts now lived in.
So, since Patrick's character is looking for his son, Dalton, we must play dead as he passes with the light.
When Patrick looks at my wife, she blinks, thus giving us away. (This was in the script and was Patrick’s clue that something was wrong.)
When he looks at me again, my newspaper is now quivering.
Patrick hears a gun being cocked, goes into the dining room, and hears three gunshots. When he returns to the living room, one daughter, my wife, and I are all dead with small red holes on our chests thanks to the makeup guys. He realizes then that the other daughter shot us.
For a split second, Patrick thinks we are smiling at him, and then he heads up the stairs still looking for his son.

James Wan was pleased that Insidious earned one hell of a distinction. The film crossed the $50 million mark in the US and ended up with a worldwide gross of $97, 009, 150, almost a hundred million. That gave the indie horror pic, made for under $1.5 million, the best cost-to-gross ratio of 2011, a good measurement of profitability.
Insidious, the film, got an A- review by Owen Gleiberman on April 5, 2011, in Entertainment Weekly.

Y’all don’t know how much terror this scene has brought me to this day.

It was my siblings’ tradition to stay up all night on the Halloween watching horror flicks. I think Insidious was the second movie we were on because we were already running out of chips on the couch. Our TV was sitting above the cabinet with a drawer where our snacks were. So I had to crouch down on the floor to open the drawer, and get some.

All of these were happening while the eerie background music was on so I got curious, and decided to look up. And that was where I saw that freaking scene at 01:41 ! I was at the bottom right of the TV screen when I looked up, so from that perspective the lady was looking straight down to me. I can’t remember much how I reacted, but I screamed and freaked out the while night.

Okay, that’s all.
