The scarring on the tree just below your tap is from deer shedding their antlers. The Cambrian layer that carries the sap has been disrupted and giving you low flow. Sometimes they will only rub against one side, Look for a tree where the line is uninterrupted or select a different tree. Drilling a hole in a tree does not hurt it so long as you plug the hole with a dowel and seal the hole. Vaseline is fine, by the time it goes away the tree will have healed itself.
